Jason J. Corso
Also known as Jason Corso, Jason Joseph Corso
Jason J. Corso is a computer vision researcher at the University of Michigan whose work on video understanding connects to language, robotics and healthcare. After a PhD in computer science at Johns Hopkins University in 2005, he taught at SUNY Buffalo from 2007 to 2014 and then joined Michigan's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His papers include Action Bank in 2012 and Grounded video description in 2019, and in 2018 he teamed up with his PhD student Brian Moore to found the computer vision data company Voxel51. In February 2025, Michigan announced an ARPA-H-funded effort to build an AI agent for rural mobile clinics, with Corso as director of the AI project; he is the Toyota Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Michigan and Co-Founder and CSO of Voxel51.

PhD at Johns Hopkins
He earns a BS with honors from Loyola College in Maryland in 2000, then an MSE in 2002 and a PhD in 2005, both in computer science at Johns Hopkins University. He spends two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles.
-
2007–2014
Faculty at Buffalo, then Michigan
He is a member of the Computer Science and Engineering faculty at SUNY Buffalo from 2007 to 2014. He then joins the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan.
-
2009–2018
NSF, Army and Google awards
He receives the NSF CAREER Award in 2009 and the Army Research Office Young Investigator Award in 2010. A Google Faculty Research Award follows in 2015, and the Michigan EECS Outstanding Achievement Award in 2018.
-
2012–2019
Video understanding papers
In 2012, he coauthors Action Bank, a high-level representation of activity in video, with Sreemanananth Sadanand at CVPR. In 2018, he coauthors work on learning procedures from web instructional videos at AAAI, and in 2019, Grounded video description at CVPR.
-
2018
Co-founding Voxel51
In 2018, he teams up with his PhD student Brian Moore at the University of Michigan to found Voxel51, which turns their research into developer-friendly tooling for computer-vision data. Its FiftyOne platform serves ML teams who work with multimodal data at scale.
-
2022
Founding Robotics faculty at Michigan
In 2022, he becomes a founding faculty member of the new Department of Robotics at the University of Michigan. He is jointly appointed in Robotics and EECS.
-
February 2025
AI for rural mobile clinics
In February 2025, Michigan announces an ARPA-H-funded effort to build an AI agent that guides medical generalists through unfamiliar diagnoses and procedures in a mobile clinic. He directs the AI project, which has up to $25 million and a team drawn from eight universities and RTX BBN Technologies. The work builds on his earlier AI guidance agents for cooking and battlefield medicine.
