Jasjit Suri
Also known as Jasjit S. Suri
Jasjit Suri is a biomedical engineer who applies artificial intelligence to medical imaging, from cardiovascular risk assessment to COVID-19 lung scans. He earned a bachelor's degree in electronics engineering in Bhopal in 1988, a master's in computer sciences at the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1991 and a PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Washington in 1997. After coauthoring a 2002 review of level sets for medical imagery, he completed an MBA at Case Western Reserve University in 2004, became a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2004 and began working as a chief technology officer in 2004. His products include the Artemis image-guided surgery device for prostate cancer and the AtheroEdge cardiovascular risk software; he received the Marquis Life Time Achievement Award in 2018 and coauthored the COVLIAS 1.0 lung-segmentation system for COVID-19 CT scans in 2021. As of October 2026, he chairs AtheroPoint in Roseville, California, and is affiliate faculty at Idaho State University.
Timeline
-
1988–1997
Degrees from Bhopal to Seattle
He earns a bachelor's in electronics engineering at Maulana Azad College of Technology, Bhopal, in 1988, an MS in computer sciences at the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1991, and a PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1997.
-
2002
A review of level sets
In 2002, he coauthors "Shape recovery algorithms using level sets in 2-D/3-D medical imagery: A state-of-the-art review" with Kecheng Liu, Sameer Singh, Swamy N. Laxminarayan, Xiaolan Zeng and Laura Reden, published in IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine. The paper surveys level sets, the geometric deformable models used for fast shape recovery in medical images.
-
2002–2004
An MBA at Case Western
He joins the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in 2002 and completes an MBA there in 2004.
-
2004
An AIMBE fellowship
In 2004, he is named a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) for contributions to health imaging.
-
Since 2004
Artemis and AtheroEdge
From 2004, he works as a chief technology officer on future product designs and intellectual property portfolios. His products include Artemis, an image-guided surgery robotics device for three-dimensional sonography with needle tracking in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, and AtheroEdge 3.0, which applies AI and ultrasound to cardiovascular risk assessment.
-
2018
A Marquis lifetime award
In 2018, he receives the Marquis Life Time Achievement Award.
-
2021
COVLIAS 1.0 lung segmentation
In 2021, he coauthors the paper presenting COVLIAS 1.0, AtheroPoint's COVID Lung Image Analysis System. Its hybrid deep learning models segment the lungs in COVID-19 computed tomography scans, and the system is tested on 5000 chest CT images from 72 patients.
-
As of October 2026
AtheroPoint and Idaho State
He chairs AtheroPoint, a medical imaging company in Roseville, California, and is affiliate faculty at Idaho State University. In July 2026, he coauthors COVLIAS 3.5 in Scientific Reports, which pairs attention-based U-Net lung segmentation with fuzzy logic-enhanced CNNs to improve pneumonia diagnosis.
