James Philbin
James Philbin is a computer-vision researcher and autonomy executive whose work spans visual retrieval and autonomous driving. At Oxford, he researched large-scale object retrieval, co-founded the mobile visual-search startup Plink, and joined Google Goggles after Google acquired Plink in 2010. He later led computer-vision and perception work at Zoox and software engineering at Waymo before Rivian hired him to lead autonomy and AI in 2022. Rivian's Large Driving Model uses generative AI and reinforcement learning for self-driving, and he is the company's senior vice-president of Autonomy and AI as of October 2026.
Timeline
-
2007–2010
Object retrieval at Oxford
At Oxford's Visual Geometry Group, he researches efficient large-scale object retrieval under Andrew Zisserman while pursuing a PhD. In 2007, he coauthors a CVPR paper on large vocabularies and fast spatial matching; in 2010, he writes a University of Oxford PhD thesis on scalable object retrieval.
-
2009
Founding Plink Search
In 2009, he co-founds Plink Search to build mobile visual-search tools. Its Plink Art app lets people find information about artworks from a visual example.
-
2010
Google Goggles after Plink
Google acquires the mobile visual-search startup in 2010, and Philbin and co-founder Mark Cummins work on Google Goggles, Google's visual-search project.
