Researcher

Edward Y. Chang

Also known as Edward Y Chang

Edward Y Chang is a computer scientist whose work connects scalable machine learning with healthcare AI. He earned a Stanford PhD in electrical engineering, gained tenure at UC Santa Barbara, and later studied surgical applications of virtual reality at Berkeley. At Google Research, he led parallel machine-learning work and helped secure support for ImageNet; at HTC, he co-led DeepQ, whose project earned second place in the 2017 Tricorder XPRIZE. ACM named him a Fellow in 2021 for contributions to scalable machine learning and healthcare. He is an adjunct professor at Stanford, where his work spans virtual assistance and large language models; in 2025, he coauthored a paper on collaborative LLM reasoning.

Timeline

  1. 1999–2003

    Stanford PhD and UCSB tenure

He completes a PhD in electrical engineering at Stanford in 1999. In 2003, he gains tenure at UC Santa Barbara.

  2. 2006–2012

    Parallel learning at Google

From 2006 to 2012, he directs research at Google, where he develops parallel and data-centric machine-learning methods and secures sponsorship for ImageNet. In 2011, he gives a Google China keynote on mobile information management and retrieval.

  3. 2013–2017

    Co-leading HTC's DeepQ

At HTC, he co-leads DeepQ, which develops mobile wireless diagnostic instruments, and develops AI-powered diagnostics. The project enters the Tricorder XPRIZE in 2013 and takes second place, earning US$1 million, in April 2017. In 2017, he coauthors the MMHealth paper “Artificial Intelligence in XPRIZE DeepQ Tricorder.”

  4. 2016–2019

    Visiting scholar at Berkeley

From 2016 to 2019, he serves as a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley's Virtual Reality Lab, applying virtual reality to surgical procedures.

  5. 2021

    An ACM Fellowship

ACM names him a Fellow in 2021 for contributions to scalable machine learning and healthcare.

  6. 2024

A book on large language models

In 2024, he publishes Unlocking the Wisdom of Large Language Models.

  7. 2025

    A controller for LLM debate

In 2025, he and Ethan Y. Chang introduce MACI, a dual-dial controller for collaborative LLM reasoning. It gates evidence by quality and adjusts debate behavior from exploration to consolidation.

  8. Since 2019

    Adjunct professor at Stanford

He is an adjunct professor of computer science at Stanford and has served in the role since 2019. His research covers virtual assistance and, more recently, large language models. Stanford lists him teaching a course on artificial general intelligence, reasoning, planning, and decision making.
