James C. Gee
Also known as James Gee
James C. Gee is a professor of radiologic science and of computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania, where he directs the Penn Image Computing and Science Laboratory and his group works on medical image analysis and radiological AI. Born and raised in Nigeria, he earned two bachelor's degrees and a master's at the University of Washington before completing a Penn PhD in computer and information science in 1996. His coauthored methods include the SyN image registration method in 2008 and the N4ITK bias-correction tool in 2010, and in 2021 he coauthored the paper describing ANTsX, whose extensions add deep learning models to the ANTs toolkit. Inducted as an AIMBE Fellow in 2018 and named a MICCAI Fellow in 2024, he has also directed Penn Engineering's online master's program in data science since 2022, and in 2026 he is a co-principal investigator on a Google.org grant that pilots the MedGemma model for lung-disease care in Botswana.
Timeline
-
1987–1996
Washington degrees and a Penn PhD
He earns bachelor's degrees in computer science and electrical engineering at the University of Washington in 1987 and a master's in electrical engineering there in 1989. He completes a PhD in computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1996, receiving an NIH R01 grant while pursuing dissertation research on brain mapping.
-
2008–2011
SyN and the ANTs toolkit
With Brian Avants and other coauthors, he develops the Symmetric Normalization (SyN) transformation model, published in 2008, which performs in the top rank across all tests of a 2009 comparison of registration algorithms by Klein and colleagues. In 2011, the team describes ANTs, an open-source package built on the Insight Toolkit with tools for image registration, template building and segmentation.
-
2010
N4ITK bias correction
In 2010, he coauthors N4ITK, an improved version of the N3 algorithm for bias field correction in images, with Nicholas Tustison, Brian Avants, Paul Yushkevich and other Penn radiology colleagues. The code, tests and documentation go public through the National Institutes of Health's Insight Toolkit.
-
2018
An AIMBE fellowship
In April 2018, as an associate professor of radiologic science and director of the Penn Image Computing and Science Laboratory, he is inducted into the AIMBE College of Fellows for contributions to advanced medical image registration and analysis methods. He has recently received two grants totaling $3.9 million to build a three-dimensional, cellular-resolution digital atlas of brain cell types with the Allen Institute for Brain Science, MIT, Harvard and UC San Diego.
-
2021
Deep learning in ANTsX
In April 2021, he coauthors the Scientific Reports paper describing ANTsX, the ecosystem built around the Advanced Normalization Tools library, which was founded in 2008 with Symmetric Normalization. Its ANTsRNet and ANTsPyNet extensions, built on TensorFlow and Keras, add trained deep learning models, including a pipeline that estimates cortical thickness from T1-weighted brain MRI.
-
Since 2022
Data science program director
By June 2022, he is program director of Penn Engineering's new online Master of Science in Engineering in Data Science (MSE-DS Online). He still leads the program in January 2026, when he speaks to prospective students in a Focus on Faculty webinar.
-
2024
A MICCAI fellowship
The MICCAI Society names him a MICCAI Fellow in 2024, alongside Hayit Greenspan and Nicolas Padoy, for the development and open-source distribution of computational methods for medical imaging. In October 2025, he gives a MICCAI Fellows talk titled "From Atlases to Radiological AI."
-
As of October 2026
Radiological AI at Penn
He is a professor of radiologic science in radiology and of computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania, where he directs the Penn Image Computing and Science Laboratory and his group works on medical image analysis and radiological AI. Born and raised in Nigeria, he focuses new work on medical AI for low-resource settings across Africa. In April 2026, he and Ameena Elahi are named co-principal investigators on a $110,000 Google.org Health AI grant, awarded to Farouk Dako and Satvik Tripathi, that pilots Google's MedGemma model for AI-assisted triage and structured reporting of lung disease at partner sites in Botswana.
