Jacek M. Zurada

Also known as Jacek Żurada, Jacek Maciej Żurada

Jacek M. Zurada is a Polish-American computer scientist, born in Sosnowiec in 1944, who has been a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Louisville since 1989 and works on neural networks. Trained at Gdańsk University of Technology, he wrote the 1992 textbook Introduction to Artificial Neural Systems and contributed the lambda learning rule of the perceptron. He edited IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks from 1998 to 2003, led the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2004–05 and served as IEEE Technical Activities Vice President in 2014. The IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society gave him its 2025 Norbert Wiener Award, and UofL named its Zurada high-performance computing system, launched in late 2025, after him.

Timeline

  1. 1944–1978

Degrees in Gdańsk, postdoc in Zurich

Born in Sosnowiec in 1944, he completes a master's degree at the Faculty of Electronics of Gdańsk University of Technology in 1968 under Jerzy Seidler. He defends his doctorate under Michał Białko in 1975 and is a postdoctoral fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1977–1978.

  2. 1989–2006

    Professor at Louisville

He joins the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, as a professor in 1989. He becomes S.T. Fife Professor in 1993 and chairs the department from 2004 to 2006.

  3. 1992–2000

    Introduction to Artificial Neural Systems

He publishes the textbook Introduction to Artificial Neural Systems with PWS in 1992, then co-edits the IEEE Press volume Computational Intelligence: Imitating Life in 1994 and the MIT Press volume Knowledge-Based Neurocomputing in 2000. His contributions include the lambda learning rule of the perceptron and the extension of complex-valued neurons to associative memories.

  4. 1998–2014

Editing IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks

He is editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks from 1998 to 2003 and president of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2004–05. In 2014, he serves as IEEE Technical Activities Vice President.

  5. 2003–2005

    Polish Academy of Sciences membership

The President of Poland gives him the title of professor in 2003. He becomes an elected foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2005.

  6. 2020–2021

    Distinguished Lecturer on AI

Elected a 2020–21 Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society, he travels to lecture on AI, and he is a candidate for 2020 IEEE President. At UofL, he teaches a graduate Deep Learning class and works with Tamer Inanc and medical school faculty on optimizing drug dosing for patients.

  7. 2025

    The Norbert Wiener Award

The IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society gives him its 2025 Norbert Wiener Award for contributions to technical cybernetics and the foundational theory of neural networks as learning systems.

  8. 2025–2026

    The Zurada computing system

UofL launches the $3.7-million Zurada high-performance computing system, named after him, in late 2025; by May 2026, researchers use it for work in materials, personalized medicine and AI. He is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at UofL.
