Timeline

  1. Journalism years

    Reporting on technology

Clark worked as a journalist at The Register and Bloomberg. Reporting gave him a public role in explaining technical developments and the companies behind them. He later carried that interest in readable accounts of research into his newsletter and his work on AI policy.

  2. OpenAI policy years

    Moving into policy work

Clark became policy director at OpenAI. The role moved him from reporting on technology to work inside an organization developing it. His public career began to connect technical capability with questions about government, measurement and the social effects of increasingly capable systems.

  3. 2021

    Co-founding Anthropic

Clark co-founded Anthropic in 2021. His earlier policy experience became part of a company developing AI systems. He continued public work through Import AI, connecting research summaries and commentary with questions about the way laboratories, governments and society respond to technical progress.

  4. March 2026

    Taking the public-benefit role

Anthropic announced the Anthropic Institute in March 2026, with Clark taking the role of Head of Public Benefit. The institute brought together work on model testing, social impacts and economic effects. The announcement extended his policy work into a new company structure for studying consequences.

  5. 2026

    Keeping Import AI active

Clark continues to write Import AI, with entries covering research and its possible effects. He has a current leadership role at Anthropic. The newsletter remains a separate public channel where readers can follow technical papers, policy developments and Clark’s interpretations of where they may lead.
