Timeline

  1. 2014–2018

    A PhD at Swinburne

He earns a bachelor's and a master's degree in computer science and engineering at Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology in Bangladesh. A fully funded Postgraduate Research Award scholarship supports his PhD in computer science at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne from 2014 to 2018, in data science with AI and machine-learning based modeling.

  2. 2016–2018

    Mining smartphone behavior rules

He receives an IEEE award at the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics in Montreal. In 2018, he and Flora D. Salim write "Mining User Behavioral Rules from Smartphone Data through Association Analysis" for the Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining in Melbourne, a method that extracts a concise set of non-redundant behavioral association rules from individual users' phone data.

  3. 2021

Machine learning and deep learning overviews

In March 2021, he publishes "Machine Learning: Algorithms, Real-World Applications and Research Directions" in SN Computer Science, which explains the principles of machine learning techniques and their use in cybersecurity, smart cities, healthcare, e-commerce and agriculture. In August 2021, he follows with "Deep Learning: A Comprehensive Overview on Techniques, Taxonomy, Applications and Research Directions", which sets out a taxonomy of deep learning methods and ten directions for future work. Springer also publishes his book Context-Aware Machine Learning and Mobile Data Analytics in 2021, with chapters written with Alan Colman, Jun Han and Paul Watters.

  4. 2022–2024

Postdoc at the Cyber Security CRC

From 2022 to 2024, he works as a postdoctoral research fellow of the Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre, in association with the Security Research Institute and the Centre for Securing Digital Futures at Edith Cowan University. The work covers data- and AI-driven cybersecurity, in academia-industry collaboration that includes CSIRO Data61.

  5. April 2024

    A book on AI-driven cybersecurity

Springer publishes his book "AI-Driven Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence: Cyber Automation, Intelligent Decision-Making and Explainability" in April 2024. It covers machine learning algorithms, data science modeling, generative AI modeling, threat intelligence frameworks and explainable AI models.

  6. 2025

    An Elsevier journal award

In 2025, he receives an Elsevier Journal Award as a lead author and the ICT Express Best Paper Runner Award, in Portugal.

  7. 2026

    Top 2% most-cited scientists

In 2026, Elsevier and Stanford University list him among the world's top 2% most-cited scientists in both the career-long and single-year categories. He has appeared on the list since 2021.

  8. Since 2024

    Research Fellow at ECU

Since 2024, he is a Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University in Perth, where he plans and leads research projects and publications, supervises PhD and master's by research students and builds academia-industry collaboration. In January 2026, he and Helge Janicke, Ahmad Mohsin and Leandros Maglaras publish the perspective "SME-TEAM" in npj Artificial Intelligence, a framework that positions trust and ethics as a driving force for resilience and sustainable innovation in the use of AI and large language models by small and medium-sized enterprises. In 2026, he is also program chair of the IFIP SEC conference in Perth.
