Ir Pieter P. Jonker
Also known as Pieter Jonker, Prof.dr.ir. P.P. Jonker
Ir Pieter P. Jonker is a pattern-recognition researcher whose work spans special-purpose architectures, robot vision, and deep-learning media tools. After studying electrical engineering at the University of Twente and working at TNO, he joined TU Delft in 1984 and became a part-time Machine Vision professor at TU/e by 2009. He became an IAPR Fellow in 1994; his Clockwork Orange team competed in RoboCup, and his later work explored depth-from-luminance and human-inspired active vision. In 2022, he coauthored Photo2Video, and as of October 2026 he is a professor at TU Delft.

After studying electrical engineering at the University of Twente and working at TNO, he joins TU Delft in 1984.
-
1994
An IAPR fellowship
IAPR names Ir Pieter P. Jonker a Fellow in 1994 for contributions to special purpose architectures and service to IAPR.
-
1999–2004
Clockwork Orange in RoboCup
His Clockwork Orange team from TU Delft's Pattern Recognition section competes in RoboCup from 1999; in 2004, the team seeks a quarterfinal place in Portugal.
-
2009
Machine vision at TU/e
By March 2009, he is a part-time professor of Machine Vision in TU/e's Mechanical Engineering department and its Dynamics and Control Theory group.
-
2015
A depth-from-luminance method
He and Delft colleagues develop a method that uses image luminance to calculate depth maps and convert still pictures into 3D formats.
-
2017
Active vision for humanoid robots
He coauthors an active-vision system that imitates human eye and neck movements and combines stereopsis with convergence to guide robot action and exploration.
-
2022
Videos from still images
He coauthors Photo2Video, a deep-learning paper that describes an automated workflow for generating semantically aware video stories from still photographs.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at TU Delft
He holds the title Prof.dr.ir. at TU Delft, with affiliations in Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, and Biomechatronics & Human-Machine Control.
