Hussain Masoom
Hussain Masoom is a scientist whose career runs from lung injury research and doctoral study in Toronto to AlphaProof, Google DeepMind's reinforcement learning system for formal mathematics. Working in Toronto, he coauthored a 2010 study finding that the transcription factor ATF3 protects against ventilator-induced lung injury and a 2012 meta-analysis of lung injury biomarkers in donor lungs. He was a PhD student in the Andre Simpson Research Group at the University of Toronto Scarborough in 2015. In December 2023, he coauthored a study that used CLIP vision-language models as reward sources for reinforcement learning agents. AlphaProof, to which he was a key contributor, reached silver-medal level at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad with AlphaGeometry 2; at Google DeepMind in London, he and Ottavia Bertolli led its project management and operations.
Timeline
-
2010
ATF3 and ventilator lung injury
Working at the Keenan Research Centre of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute in Toronto, he coauthors a 2010 study in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. It finds that the transcription factor ATF3 protects against ventilator-induced lung injury.
-
October 2012
Lung injury biomarkers in donor lungs
In October 2012, he coauthors a PLOS ONE meta-analysis of microarray gene-expression data that identifies acute lung injury biomarkers in donor lungs that predict primary graft failure in recipients. His affiliation is the University of Toronto's Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care.
-
2015
PhD student at Scarborough
In 2015, he is a PhD student in the Andre Simpson Research Group at the University of Toronto Scarborough.
-
December 2023
Vision-language models as rewards
In December 2023, he is one of 27 authors of "Vision-Language Models as a Source of Rewards", which derives rewards for reinforcement learning agents from the CLIP family of models. Its results show that larger vision-language models give more accurate rewards and more capable agents.
-
July 2024
AlphaProof at the 2024 IMO
In July 2024, Google DeepMind's AlphaProof, a reinforcement-learning system for formal math reasoning, and AlphaGeometry 2 solve four of the six problems from the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad, scoring 28 of 42 points, the level of a silver medalist. He is a key contributor to AlphaProof, which couples a pre-trained language model with the AlphaZero reinforcement learning algorithm to prove statements in Lean.
-
November 2025
Leading AlphaProof operations
Working at Google DeepMind in London, he coauthors the AlphaProof paper published in Nature in November 2025, where he and Ottavia Bertolli lead project management and operations. The paper describes test-time reinforcement learning, which generates and learns from millions of related problem variants at inference time.
