Huajin Tang
Also known as 唐华锦
Huajin Tang is a computer scientist at Zhejiang University who works on brain-inspired computing, from spiking neural networks to neuromorphic chips and robot cognition. After a PhD at the National University of Singapore in 2005 and a postdoc at the Queensland Brain Institute, he headed the Robotic Cognition Lab at A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research from 2008 to 2015, where he coauthored work on artificial place and grid cells that guided a small wheeled robot. In 2014 he became a professor at Sichuan University, and he received IEEE outstanding paper awards in 2016 and 2019. At Zhejiang University, he coauthored Darwin3, a neuromorphic chip that supports up to 2.35 million neurons, and the IEEE named him a Fellow in its class of 2026 for contributions to brain-inspired computing and machine cognition. He is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the university's College of Computer Science and Technology.
Timeline
-
1998–2008
Degrees and a Queensland postdoc
He earns a B.Eng. at Zhejiang University in 1998, an M.Eng. at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2001 and a PhD at the National University of Singapore in 2005. From 2004 to 2006, he is an R&D engineer with STMicroelectronics in Singapore. He then spends 2006 to 2008 as a postdoctoral fellow at the Queensland Brain Institute of the University of Queensland.
-
2008–2015
Robotic Cognition Lab at A*STAR
From 2008 to 2015, he heads the Robotic Cognition Lab at the Institute for Infocomm Research in Singapore, which gives him its Role Model Award in 2011. In 2015, with Haizhou Li and Yuan Miaolong, he coauthors work on software models of place and grid cells that let a small wheeled robot find its way around.
-
2014–2017
Professor at Sichuan University
He becomes a professor at Sichuan University in 2014. He serves as program chair or general chair of the IEEE CIS-RAM conference in 2015 and 2017.
-
2016–2019
Paper awards and a special issue
He receives the 2016 IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems Outstanding Paper Award. In June 2018, he guest-edits a special issue on neuromorphic computing and cognitive systems in IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems with Tiejun Huang, Jeffrey L. Krichmar, Garrick Orchard and Arindam Basu. In 2019, he wins the IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine Outstanding Paper Award and joins the Board of Governors of the International Neural Network Society.
-
2020–2022
Professor at Zhejiang University
In April 2020, as a professor at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, he invites researchers in neuromorphic computing, spiking neural networks and robotics to apply to a new brain-inspired computing research center at Zhejiang Lab, an institute jointly established by Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang University and Alibaba Group. In 2022, he begins a term as Governor-at-Large of the International Neural Network Society that runs to 2027.
-
2023–2024
The Darwin3 neuromorphic chip
In December 2023, he coauthors Darwin3 with De Ma, Gang Pan and colleagues, a large-scale neuromorphic chip for spiking neural networks with a new instruction set, on-chip learning and support for up to 2.35 million neurons. The paper appears in National Science Review in March 2024.
-
2026
IEEE Fellow
The IEEE names him a Fellow in its class of 2026, evaluated by the Computational Intelligence Society, for contributions to brain-inspired computing and machine cognition.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and doctoral supervisor
He is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the College of Computer Science and Technology at Zhejiang University. His research covers neuromorphic computing, neuromorphic sensors and chips, robotic cognition, and neuroscience and AI.
