Hanqing Lu
Also known as 卢汉清, Lu Hanqing
Hanqing Lu is a computer-vision researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences who has worked at its Institute of Automation since 1992, with a focus on image and video analysis. He held visiting posts at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1994 to 1998, and became a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition in 1999. In 2004 he coauthored a face-detection paper using an improved LBP, and in 2012 an AAAI paper on Nonnegative Discriminative Feature Selection. In 2019 he coauthored the Dual Attention Network for scene segmentation and the two-stream adaptive graph convolutional network for skeleton-based action recognition at CVPR, followed by Shift-GCN at CVPR in 2020. He is a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition.
Timeline
-
1992–1998
Postdoc, then associate researcher
From 1992 to 1994, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He stays on as an associate researcher there from 1994 to 1998.
-
1994–1998
Visiting researcher in Hong Kong
Between 1994 and 1998, he holds visiting researcher posts at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
-
1999
Researcher and doctoral supervisor
He becomes a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition in 1999. His research interest is image and video analysis.
-
2004
Face detection with improved LBP
He coauthors "Face detection using improved LBP under Bayesian framework" with H Jin, Q Liu and X Tong for the Third International Conference on Image and Graphics in 2004.
-
2012
Unsupervised feature selection at AAAI
The Twenty-Sixth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence in 2012 carries his paper with Zechao Li, Yi Yang, Jing Liu and Xiaofang Zhou, which proposes Nonnegative Discriminative Feature Selection (NDFS). The algorithm learns cluster labels through spectral clustering while it selects features.
-
2019
Dual attention for scene segmentation
In 2019, he coauthors Dual Attention Network for Scene Segmentation (DANet) with Jun Fu, Jing Liu and colleagues at CVPR. DANet adds position and channel attention modules to a dilated FCN and reaches new state-of-the-art results on Cityscapes, PASCAL Context and COCO Stuff.
-
2019–2020
Graph networks for action recognition
The two-stream adaptive graph convolutional network (2s-AGCN), coauthored with Lei Shi, Yifan Zhang and Jian Cheng, appears at CVPR in 2019. Shift-GCN, coauthored with Ke Cheng and colleagues, follows at CVPR in 2020 and is built from shift graph operations and lightweight point-wise convolutions.
-
As of October 2026
Researcher at the Institute of Automation
He continues as a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research covers image and video analysis, skeleton-based action recognition and object detection.
