Ran He

Also known as He Ran, Runping He, 赫然

Ran He is a computer vision researcher whose AI work spans face recognition, biometrics, and face synthesis. His computer science degrees came from Dalian University of Technology; he completed a doctorate in pattern recognition and intelligent systems at CASIA in 2009 and joined NLPR in 2010. Two of his papers were Light CNN, which learned compact embeddings from noisy face data, and TP-GAN, which generated identity-preserving frontal face views. IAPR named him a Fellow in 2020 for contributions to biometrics and face recognition; IEEE named him a Fellow in 2025 for face analysis and image synthesis. As of October 2026 he is a professor at CASIA and UCAS and vice president for technical activities of the IEEE Biometrics Council.

Timeline

  1. 2001–2009

    Degrees in computer science

His education begins with a B.E. in computer science at Dalian University of Technology in 2001 and an M.S. there in 2004; he completes a Ph.D. in pattern recognition and intelligent systems at CASIA in 2009.

  2. 2010–2011

    Early NLPR appointments

At NLPR he serves as an assistant professor from 2010 to 2011 and as an associate professor there from 2011.

  3. 2015

    Light CNN for face images

In 2015 he coauthors Light CNN, a framework that learns a compact embedding from large-scale face data with noisy labels.

  4. 2015–2016

    Professor at UCAS and CASIA

UCAS appoints him as a professor in 2015; NLPR at CASIA appoints him as a professor in 2016.

  5. 2017

    TP-GAN for frontal face synthesis

At ICCV 2017 he coauthors TP-GAN, which synthesizes photorealistic frontal face views and preserves identity for downstream face recognition.

  6. 2020

    An IAPR Fellowship

In 2020, IAPR names him a Fellow for contributions to biometrics, face recognition, and applications.

  7. 2025

    An IEEE Fellowship

In 2025, IEEE elevates him to Fellow for contributions to face analysis and image synthesis.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and council role

As of October 2026 he is a professor at NLPR, CASIA, and UCAS, with research interests in biometrics, machine learning, and computer vision. During the 2026–2027 term he serves as vice president for technical activities of the IEEE Biometrics Council.
