Haitham Khedr
Haitham Khedr is a computer scientist whose work runs from the formal verification of neural networks to the Segment Anything family of vision models at Meta. After a BSc in electrical and computer engineering at Ain Shams University in 2016 and two years in industry, he joined Yasser Shoukry's Resilient Cyber-Physical Systems group and completed a PhD at UC Irvine in 2023. His papers there included PEREGRiNN in 2021, CertiFair in 2023 and DeepBern-Nets in 2024. At Meta he was a core contributor to SAM 2 in 2024, which received an ICLR 2025 Outstanding Paper Honorable Mention, and to SAM 3 in 2025. He is a core contributor on the SAM 3 team at Meta Superintelligence Labs.

Timeline
-
2016
Engineering degree at Ain Shams
In 2016, he earns a BSc in electrical and computer engineering at Ain Shams University, then works for two years in industry in the automotive and traffic safety fields.
-
2018–2023
PhD at UC Irvine
He spends a year at the University of Maryland in the Resilient Cyber-Physical Systems group of Yasser Shoukry before coming to UC Irvine, where he belongs to the group from 2018 to 2023. An MSc in electrical engineering and computer science follows in 2021, and a PhD in 2023 with the dissertation "Formal Verification of Neural Network Properties: Algorithms and Applications". Meta is his first employer after the degree.
-
2020–2021
The PEREGRiNN verifier
In 2020, he is first author of PEREGRiNN, written with James Ferlez and Yasser Shoukry: a verifier for ReLU neural networks with polytopic input and output specifications. The International Conference on Computer-Aided Verification accepts the paper in 2021.
-
2023–2024
CertiFair and DeepBern-Nets
With Yasser Shoukry, he publishes CertiFair at AAAI in 2023, a sound and complete verifier for global individual fairness of ReLU classifiers. DeepBern-Nets follows at AAAI in 2024, a class of networks with Bernstein polynomial activations and an interval bound propagation algorithm called Bern-IBP.
-
August 2024
Core contributor on SAM 2
At Meta FAIR, he is one of the core contributors to SAM 2: Segment Anything in Images and Videos, posted in August 2024. The model is a transformer with streaming memory for real-time video processing, released with the largest video segmentation dataset to date.
-
2025
An ICLR honorable mention
ICLR 2025 names SAM 2: Segment Anything in Images and Videos one of three Outstanding Paper Honorable Mentions. He is among its authors.
-
November 2025
SAM 3 and concept prompts
In November 2025, he is a core contributor to SAM 3: Segment Anything with Concepts from Meta Superintelligence Labs. The unified model detects, segments, and tracks objects in images and videos from concept prompts such as short noun phrases.
-
As of October 2026
At Meta Superintelligence Labs
He is a core contributor on the SAM 3 team at Meta Superintelligence Labs, which releases SAM 3.1 in March 2026 with faster joint tracking of multiple objects.
