Gustavo de Rosa
Gustavo de Rosa is a computer scientist whose work spans natural-language processing, neural architecture search and small language models. He earned computer-science degrees at UNESP, visited the University of Virginia as a biomedical engineering student in 2017, and completed a PhD focused on natural-language processing and adversarial learning. At Microsoft Research, he contributed to Archai and coauthored papers on phi-1, Phi-4 and Phi-4-reasoning. In August 2026, he coauthored “Full-bandwidth transformer”; as of October 2026, he is a Member of Technical Staff in Microsoft Research’s AI Frontiers lab.
Timeline
-
2016
A computer science degree
At UNESP’s FC/Bauru, he earns a Bachelor of Computer Science in 2016 and discovers an interest in artificial intelligence through work in a research laboratory.
-
2017
Visiting student at UVA
In 2017, he is a visiting biomedical engineering student at the University of Virginia.
-
2018
A master's in computer science
At UNESP’s IBILCE/Rio Preto, he earns an MSc in computer science in 2018, building expertise in image processing, pattern recognition, machine-learning algorithms and meta-heuristic optimization.
-
2022
A PhD in language processing
His PhD at UNESP’s FC/Bauru focuses on natural language processing and adversarial learning; he completes it in 2022.
-
2023
Archai and phi-1
At Microsoft Research, he helps create and maintain Archai, a platform for neural architecture search. He also coauthors “Textbooks Are All You Need,” which introduces phi-1, a 1.3-billion-parameter code model trained with textbook-quality web data and synthetic exercises.
-
2024
The Phi-4 report
In 2024, he coauthors the Phi-4 Technical Report, which introduces a 14-billion-parameter language model with a training recipe focused on data quality and synthetic data.
-
January 2025–April 2025
Phi-4-reasoning at Microsoft
In January 2025, he is a Senior Research Engineer at Microsoft and discusses development of the Phi model family. In April 2025, he coauthors Phi-4-reasoning, a 14-billion-parameter reasoning model fine-tuned with curated prompts and demonstrations generated using o3-mini.
-
As of October 2026
Member of Technical Staff
In August 2026, he coauthors “Full-bandwidth transformer,” which feeds a transformer’s top-layer hidden state into the next decoding step. As of October 2026, he is a Member of Technical Staff in Microsoft Research’s AI Frontiers lab in Redmond.
