Gul Agha
Also known as Gul A. Agha, گل آغا
Gul Agha is a computer scientist whose work on the actor model of concurrent computation grew out of an early interest in parallelism in AI. Born in Sindh, Pakistan, he was accepted to Caltech at 16, earned a B.S. in 1977, and finished a Ph.D. at Michigan with much of the research in Carl Hewitt's group at MIT; MIT Press published the dissertation in 1986 as Actors: A Model of Concurrent Computation in Distributed Systems. He joined the University of Illinois faculty in 1989, edited ACM Computing Surveys from 2000 to 2007, became an IEEE Fellow in 2002, and founded the Illinois Structural Health Monitoring Project with Bill Spencer in 2002. The ACM named him a Fellow in 2018 for research in concurrent programming and formal methods, specifically the Actor Model, and colleagues honored his career with a festschrift symposium in October 2025. Today he is a research professor and professor emeritus of computer science in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at Illinois, where his current work looks at making information technology, including AI, more energy efficient.
Timeline
-
By 1977
From Sindh to Caltech
Born in Sindh, Pakistan, he is accepted to Caltech at 16, the first person from Pakistan admitted there. He earns a B.S. with honors in 1977.
-
1980s
Actors at Michigan and MIT
Studying quantitative psychology at Michigan draws him to parallelism in AI, and he earns a Ph.D. in Computer and Communication Science there under John Holland. Much of the doctoral research takes place in Carl Hewitt's Message-Passing Semantics Group at MIT. MIT Press publishes the dissertation in 1986 as Actors: A Model of Concurrent Computation in Distributed Systems.
-
1989
Joining the Illinois faculty
After a brief stint at Yale, he joins the University of Illinois faculty in 1989. There he builds a strong group of faculty in formal methods and programming languages by persuading his top choices to move to Urbana-Champaign.
-
2000–2007
Editor of Computing Surveys
From 2000 to 2007, he is editor-in-chief of ACM Computing Surveys. He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2002.
-
2002
Structural health monitoring project
In 2002, he and Bill Spencer found the Illinois Structural Health Monitoring Project, which applies wireless sensor networks and distributed computing to monitor bridges and other civil infrastructure. Agha also co-founds the startup Embedor Technologies, which develops sensor network solutions for the Internet of Things.
-
2018
Machine learning across edge and cloud
A SysML Conference paper in 2018, coauthored with Tarek Elgamal, Atul Sandur and Klara Nahrstedt, addresses the distributed placement of machine learning operators for IoT applications spanning edge and cloud resources.
-
2018
ACM Fellow for the Actor Model
The ACM names him a Fellow in 2018 for “research in concurrent programming and formal methods, specifically the Actor Model”, while he is Director of the Open Systems Laboratory. Actor frameworks such as Scala/Akka, Erlang and Microsoft Orleans have been used to program Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook Chat. His group's concolic testing method is incorporated in software testing tools such as KLEE, Microsoft SAGE and S2E.
-
As of October 2026
Professor emeritus at Illinois
He is a research professor and professor emeritus of computer science in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at Illinois. Colleagues and former students hold a festschrift symposium for him in Chicago in October 2025, and his current work looks at making information technology, including AI, more energy efficient.
