Grigoris Antoniou
Also known as Grigorios Antoniou
Grigoris Antoniou is a computer scientist who works on knowledge representation, nonmonotonic reasoning and the semantic web, and on AI tools for mental healthcare. Born in Thessalonica, he studied computer science in Karlsruhe, earned his PhD at Osnabrück, and held professorships at Griffith University, the University of Bremen and the University of Crete before heading the Information Systems Laboratory at FORTH from 2004. His books include Non-monotonic Reasoning, published by MIT Press in 1997, and A Semantic Web Primer, written with Frank van Harmelen and published by MIT Press in 2004. At the University of Huddersfield from 2012, he worked with an NHS trust on AI support for diagnosing ADHD in adults and was elected an IEEE Fellow in 2022. Since February 2024, he is Professor of Computer Science at Leeds Beckett University, where he works on explainable and responsible AI for health; the European Academy of Sciences and Arts elected him a member in 2025.
Timeline
-
1990s
Professor at Griffith University
Born in Thessalonica, he studies computer science in Karlsruhe and earns his PhD at the University of Osnabrück, where his academic career begins. For much of the 1990s, he works in Australia and becomes Professor of Computing and Information Technology at Griffith University. MIT Press publishes his book Non-monotonic Reasoning in 1997.
-
2002–2012
Head of a FORTH laboratory
After a professorship at the University of Bremen, he becomes Professor of Computer Science at the University of Crete in 2002. In 2004, he begins eight years as Head of the Information Systems Laboratory at FORTH's Institute of Computer Science, with work on the European projects REWERSE, on reasoning on the web, and CASPAR, on digital preservation.
-
2004–2012
A Semantic Web Primer
In 2004, MIT Press publishes A Semantic Web Primer, his textbook with Frank van Harmelen that introduces the semantic web's key ideas, languages and technologies. Revised editions follow in 2008 and 2012, and the book is translated into Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Greek.
-
2006
An ECCAI fellowship
In 2006, he is elected an ECCAI Fellow, joining a list of top European researchers in artificial intelligence. The European Association for Artificial Intelligence lists him among its current fellows.
-
2012–2024
Professor at Huddersfield
Early in 2012, he moves to the UK to take up a professorship at the University of Huddersfield, which he holds until early 2024. There he researches web semantics, which aims to let computers make more sense of the information they search for and process on the web.
-
2020
AI for adult ADHD diagnosis
In April 2020, he leads a £100k project with the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust that combines machine learning with encoded clinical expertise to help diagnose ADHD in adults. In October 2020, the project wins a £140,000 AI in Health and Care Award from the NHS AI Lab, one of 42 awards from more than 530 applications.
-
2022
Fellow of the IEEE
As Huddersfield's Professor of Artificial Intelligence, he is elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2022 for contributions to knowledge representation within artificial intelligence and to the semantic web.
-
Since February 2024
Professor at Leeds Beckett
In February 2024, he joins Leeds Beckett University as Professor of Computer Science in the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing, where he works on explainable and responsible AI for health in the Intelligent Computing Research Cluster. He is elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in March 2025. At the SETN 2026 conference, he gives an invited talk on AI as clinical decision support for adult ADHD, adult ASD and suicidology.
