Researcher

Graham Cormode

Graham Cormode works on streaming algorithms, data sketches, privacy and machine learning over large datasets. He earned a computer-science PhD at Warwick in 2002 and held research posts at DIMACS, Bell Labs and AT&T before becoming Warwick Professor in 2013; he also coauthored a Count-Min Sketch paper in 2004. In 2010, he coauthored research on anonymizing bipartite graphs, and he received the 2017 Adams Prize for statistical analysis of data. His 2020 book with Ke Yi explains compact data summaries. Since January 2026, he is Professor of Computer Science at Oxford and leads AI Futures at the Oxford-UBS Centre for Applied AI.

Timeline

  1. 2000–2013

    A PhD and research posts

During summer 2000, he interns at AT&T Shannon research labs and earns a PhD in Warwick's Department of Computer Science in 2002. His postdoctoral fellowship at DIMACS, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science at Rutgers, runs from 2002 to 2004. He researches at Bell Laboratories' Internet Management Research Department from 2004 to 2006 and at AT&T Labs–Research from 2006 to 2013.

  2. 2004–2010

    Count-Min Sketch and graph privacy

In 2004, he and S. Muthukrishnan publish An Improved Data Stream Summary: The Count-Min Sketch and Its Applications. In 2010, he coauthors Anonymizing Bipartite Graph Data Using Safe Groupings, which introduces groupings that preserve graph structure while anonymizing the mapping from entities to nodes.

  3. 2013–2025

    Professor at Warwick

He serves as Professor of Computer Science in Warwick's Department of Computer Science from 2013 to 2025.

  4. 2017

    The Adams Prize

In 2017, he receives the Adams Prize in Mathematics for his work on statistical analysis of data.

  5. 2020

    Small Summaries for Big Data

In 2020, he and Ke Yi publish Small Summaries for Big Data, a book on compact data summaries, sketches, approximate counts, and summaries for graphs and distributed data.

  6. By 2025

    Research at Meta and Simons

By 2025, his research career includes positions at Meta and the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing.

  7. January 2026

    Professor at Oxford

In January 2026, he takes up the Professorship of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and a Professorial Fellowship at St John's College. He is a Governing Body fellow of St John's College.

  8. July 2026

    AI Futures at Oxford-UBS

In July 2026, he is appointed Research Theme Lead for AI Futures at the Oxford-UBS Centre for Applied AI. His research spans privacy, machine learning on massive data, and scalable computation over distributed and streaming data.
