Gianluigi Greco

Gianluigi Greco is an AI researcher whose work applies game theory to strategic decisions and opinion spread. He was a visiting PhD student at the Vienna University of Technology in 2003 and a visiting researcher at Oxford in 2006. His work earned awards for Nash equilibria, the logical foundations of AI, and opinion diffusion; EurAI named him a Fellow in 2020. He became president of AIxIA in 2022 and is rector of the University of Calabria.

Timeline

  1. 2003–2006

    Research visits in Europe

In 2003, he visits the Vienna University of Technology as a PhD student. In 2006, he visits the Oxford University Computing Laboratory as a visiting researcher.

  2. 2008–2009

    AI research awards

His work on pure Nash equilibria wins the IJCAI-JAIR Best Paper Prize in 2008. In 2009, he receives the Marco Somalvico Award for AI research.

  3. 2014

    A Kurt Gödel research prize

The Kurt Gödel Society awards him its Research Prize Fellowship in 2014 for work on the logical foundations of artificial intelligence.

  4. 2018

    Opinion diffusion and department leadership

In 2018, he coauthors “Reasoning about Consensus when Opinions Diffuse through Majority Dynamics” with Vincenzo Auletta and Diodato Ferraioli. The paper studies how majority pressure on social graphs shapes opinion spread, and IJCAI gives it a Distinguished Paper Award in 2018. He becomes director of the University of Calabria's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2018, a role he holds through 2025.

  5. 2020

    A EurAI Fellowship

EurAI names him a Fellow in 2020.

  6. February 2022

    President of AIxIA

In February 2022, AIxIA announces his appointment as president.

  7. Since November 2025

Rector of the University of Calabria

He begins his term as rector of the University of Calabria in November 2025, with the term running through October 2031.
