Giancarlo Fortino

Giancarlo Fortino is a computer engineering professor whose research links agent-based methods with Internet of Things systems. Born in Italy in 1971, he earned a computer engineering laurea at Calabria in 1995 and a PhD there in 2000. He joined Calabria's faculty, helped found the IoT spin-off SenSysCal, and co-authored a 2014 chapter on smart-object middleware. His agent-based IoT paper appeared in 2018; he became an IEEE Fellow in 2022 and chaired IEEE@Unical in 2025. As of October 2026, he is a full professor and SPEME director at Calabria and IEEE SMC Vice President for Cybernetics; the lab's work includes IoT, Edge AI, and federated learning.

Timeline

  1. 1971–2000

    From Italy to a PhD

Born in Italy in 1971, he graduates with a laurea in computer engineering from the University of Calabria in 1995 and completes a PhD there in 2000.

  2. 2001–2018

Faculty roles and an IoT spin-off

He joins the University of Calabria as an assistant professor in 2001 and becomes an associate professor in 2006. He helps found SenSysCal, a University of Calabria spin-off for IoT services, in April 2010. He co-authors a 2014 chapter on middleware for smart objects and environments, receives the Andrew P. Sage SMC Transactions Paper Award in 2014, and remains an associate professor through 2018.

  3. 2018

    Agent-based IoT systems

He and his co-authors propose agent-based computing for IoT system analysis, design, and implementation in a 2018 paper. They build on the ACOSO methodology and middleware for smart objects.

  4. 2022

    An IEEE Fellowship

He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2022.

  5. 2025

    Chairing IEEE@Unical

He chairs IEEE@Unical 2025 at the University of Calabria.

  6. As of October 2026

Professor and IEEE SMC vice president

As of October 2026, he is a full professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Calabria, directs the SPEME lab, and serves as IEEE SMC Vice President for Cybernetics, with a term ending in 2027. The lab's research includes IoT, Edge AI, and federated learning.
