Researcher

Gerhard Lakemeyer

Gerhard Lakemeyer is an AI researcher whose work connects formal knowledge representation with autonomous robotics. He earned a PhD at the University of Toronto in 1990 and joined RWTH Aachen's computer science faculty after six years at the University of Bonn. His museum robot paper received two AAAI awards, and his book with Hector Levesque explained the logic of knowledge bases; he also served as a EurAI Fellow and President. As of October 2026, he is a Professor Emeritus at RWTH Aachen, with recent work on verification for belief-based programs.

Timeline

  1. 1990s

    A Toronto PhD

He earns a PhD from the University of Toronto in 1990. After six years at the University of Bonn, he joins the faculty of RWTH Aachen's Department of Computer Science. His research focuses on knowledge representation and cognitive robotics.

  2. 1998

    The Interactive Museum Tour-Guide Robot

In 1998, he coauthors The Interactive Museum Tour-Guide Robot, which receives an AAAI-98 Outstanding Paper Award.

  3. 2000

    The Logic of Knowledge Bases

With Hector Levesque, he publishes The Logic of Knowledge Bases in 2000. The book explains logic for knowledge bases and formal reasoning over explicitly represented knowledge in symbolic AI.

  4. 2016

    A Classic Paper Award

In 2016, AAAI recognizes the museum robot paper with a Classic Paper Award for its contributions to probabilistic robot navigation and high-level planning. By July 2016, he is a EurAI Fellow and participates in an IJCAI mentoring program.

  5. 2018

    President of EurAI

In 2018, he serves as President of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence and sits on the IJCAI-ECAI conference committee.

  6. March 2020

    Logic for robot control

The Knowledge-Based Systems Group he leads studies AI, knowledge representation and reasoning, and cognitive robotics. It develops Golog-based methods for high-level mobile-robot control with task planning and execution monitoring, and belongs to Carologistics, a five-time RoboCup Logistics League champion.

  7. March 2025

    Verifying belief programs

In March 2025, he and Daxin Liu publish A Framework for Belief-based Programs and Their Verification. The paper proposes a modal-logic formalism for probabilistic belief programs and investigates whether program verification is decidable.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor Emeritus at RWTH

As of October 2026, he is a Professor Emeritus at RWTH Aachen University and remains associated with its Knowledge-Based Systems Group.
