Gérard Sabah
Gérard Sabah built a career in artificial intelligence and natural language processing, with research on automatic language understanding. He entered École Polytechnique in 1968, joined CNRS as a research trainee in 1971, earned a postgraduate diploma in computer science in 1972, and completed a third-cycle doctorate in 1973 and a state doctorate in 1978. His work included a 1986 article on knowledge for language understanding, a book on AI and language in 1988, and the CARAMEL model paper at COLING in 1990. From 2003 to 2005, he held a mission role in CNRS's STIC department, became an ECCAI Fellow, and joined the Academy of Technologies as a full member. After a long career at LIMSI, he was a CNRS research director emeritus by 2017, coauthored an essay on AI, intuition and reasoning in 2023, and is a member of the French Academy of Technologies.
Timeline
-
1968–1978
Polytechnique and CNRS
He enters École Polytechnique in 1968, joins CNRS as a research trainee at Paris VI in 1971, earns a postgraduate diploma in computer science in 1972, and completes a third-cycle doctorate in 1973 and a state doctorate in 1978.
-
1986
Knowledge for text understanding
His research spans artificial intelligence and natural language processing. In 1986, he publishes an article on the kinds of knowledge needed for automatic language understanding and the AI tools developed to represent that knowledge.
-
1988–1990
The CARAMEL model
He publishes the first volume of L'intelligence artificielle et le langage, on knowledge representation, in 1988. In 1990, his COLING paper describes CARAMEL as a model for interaction between cognitive processes underlying natural language understanding.
-
2003
A CNRS mission role
In 2003, he takes a mission role in CNRS's STIC department and becomes an honorary member of AFIA.
-
2004
An ECCAI fellowship
He becomes an ECCAI Fellow in 2004.
-
2005
Academy membership
He becomes a full member of the French Academy of Technologies in 2005.
-
2017–2023
CNRS emeritus and an AI essay
By 2017, he is a research director emeritus at CNRS after a long career at LIMSI in Orsay. In 2023, he coauthors Intuition et rationalité with Claude Roche, an essay on artificial intelligence and how intuition and reasoning work together.
-
As of October 2026
