Researcher

Gerald Penn

Gerald Penn is a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto whose research connects grammar engineering, speech summarization and multimodal language models. He earned a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon in 2000 and worked at Bell Labs from 1998 to 2001. His research includes the Attribute Logic Engine for typed-feature grammars, constraint handling rules for HPSG, and speech summarization for spontaneous conversation. He co-founded Private AI and served as its chief science officer, and he was a Beckman Senior Fellow in 2006. He teaches computational linguistics at Toronto.

Timeline

  1. 1998–2001

    Bell Labs and Carnegie Mellon

He earns a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science in 2000 and works in Bell Labs' Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory from 1998 to 2001.

  2. 2000

    ALE for typed-feature grammars

In a 2000 preprint, he presents the Attribute Logic Engine as a Prolog preprocessor for typed feature structures and its extension to a grammar development system for HPSG.

  3. 2000

    Applying CHR to HPSG

In his 2000 preprint 'Applying Constraint Handling Rules to HPSG,' he explains that CHR extends feature-structure constraints with declarative relations and complex antecedents.

  4. 2006

    Beckman Senior Fellowship

He becomes a Beckman Senior Fellow at the Beckman Institute in 2006.

  5. 2006–2010

    Speech summarization

In 2006, he coauthors a study comparing textual, acoustic and spoken-language features for spontaneous-conversation summarization. In 2010, he presents a talk summarizing his group's speech-summarization research.

  6. By 2022

    Co-founding Private AI

By 2022, he is a co-founder and former chief science officer of Private AI.

  7. 2026

    Multimodal gaze estimation

In 2026, he coauthors “Predicting Gaze Location without Camera or Eye-Tracker,” a paper that uses multimodal LLMs to analyze screen content with mouse location when estimating gaze.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Toronto

He is a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto. In Fall 2025, he teaches Discrete Mathematical Models of Sentence Structure; in Fall 2026, he teaches Introduction to Computational Linguistics.
