Ganesh Ghalme
Also known as Ganesh Sambhaji Ghalme
Ganesh Ghalme is an artificial intelligence researcher whose work links fairness and strategic behavior in machine learning. His papers range from sleeping bandits and fair reward allocation to strategic classification and governance for deployed AI agents. He completed a PhD at IISc in 2020, held a postdoctoral fellowship with Technion’s Game Theory Group through March 2022, and joined IIT Hyderabad’s Department of Artificial Intelligence in 2022. As of October 2026, he is an assistant professor in IIT Hyderabad’s Department of Artificial Intelligence, with recent work on fair multi-agent bandits and AI agent governance.
Timeline
-
2017
Thompson sampling for sleeping bandits
In 2017, he coauthors “Analysis of Thompson Sampling for Stochastic Sleeping Bandits” with Aritra Chatterjee, Shweta Jain, Rohit Vaish, and Y. Narahari. The paper gives Thompson Sampling an O(log T) regret bound when the available arms change over time.
-
2019–2021
Fairness in stochastic bandits
In 2020, he and three coauthors present “Achieving Fairness in the Stochastic Multi-armed Bandit Problem” as an oral paper at AAAI; it requires each arm to receive a pre-specified share of pulls while the algorithm learns rewards. The Journal of Machine Learning Research accepts the work in 2021.
-
June 2020–March 2022
PhD and postdoc at Technion
He completes a PhD at IISc in June 2020 and becomes a postdoctoral fellow with the Technion Game Theory Group in July 2020. He remains there through March 2022.
-
2021
Strategic classification under opacity
In 2021, he and four coauthors study how people adapt to a classifier that they cannot see. Their paper defines the price of opacity and identifies conditions under which transparency is recommended.
-
April 2022
Assistant professor at IIT Hyderabad
In April 2022, he joins IIT Hyderabad’s Department of Artificial Intelligence as an assistant professor.
-
2023–2026
A strategic agents research project
From 2023 to 2026, he serves as principal investigator of the project Learning in the Presence of Strategic Agents. The project studies algorithmic decision-making with strategic agents through game theory and machine learning.
-
2025
Fair multi-agent bandits
In 2025, he and three coauthors propose RewardFairUCB for multi-agent bandits, with guarantees for fairness and social welfare. IIT Hyderabad lists him as an interested SURE 2025 mentor for fairness in machine learning.
-
As of October 2026
Assistant professor at IIT Hyderabad
In Spring 2026, he coordinates AI for Humanity at IIT Hyderabad. In August 2026, he coauthors Resourced Authority, a mechanism-design model for participatory governance of deployed AI agents that uses compute budgets to enforce authorization. He is an assistant professor in IIT Hyderabad’s Department of Artificial Intelligence.
