Gábor Csárdi
Also known as Gabor Csardi
Gábor Csárdi is a software engineer who builds open-source infrastructure for the R data-science ecosystem and co-created the igraph network-analysis library. A research associate in Harvard's Department of Statistics, he coauthored Statistical Analysis of Network Data with R in 2014, and in 2015 the R Consortium made its first grant to him, for the R-hub package-checking service. By 2018 he was a software engineer at RStudio, where he presented the pkgman package installer in 2019, and igraph received a $180,000 Chan Zuckerberg Initiative grant in 2020. In 2026 he was among the four authors of Posit's post on bringing OpenTelemetry to R packages, which covers tracing of LLM calls in ellmer, and among the ten authors of the igraph 1.0 paper. He is a Senior Software Engineer at Posit in Barcelona, where he works on pak, cli, processx and other tools.

Timeline
-
2005–2006
Creating the igraph library
He creates the igraph software package in 2005, a network-analysis library written in C that also has R and Python packages. With Tamás Nepusz he writes its 2006 paper, “The igraph software package for complex network research”, and he remains one of its lead developers.
-
By 2014
Harvard and an R network book
He is a research associate in the Department of Statistics at Harvard University and holds a PhD in computer science from Eötvös University in Hungary. Springer publishes Statistical Analysis of Network Data with R in 2014, which he coauthors with Eric Kolaczyk.
-
2015–2016
The R-hub package builder
The R Consortium's Infrastructure Steering Committee announces its first grant in November 2015: $85,000 to him to implement R-hub. By October 2016, R-hub, an online service for building and testing R packages on a variety of platforms and R versions, is in public beta.
-
2018–2019
Software engineer at RStudio
By 2018, he is a software engineer at RStudio working on R infrastructure packages, and in May 2018 he gives a webinar on the R-hub builder. At rstudio::conf in January 2019, he presents pkgman, a package installer meant to make installation fast and reliable.

May 2020
A Chan Zuckerberg grant for igraph
In May 2020, the igraph project announces a $180,000 grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's Essential Open Source Software for Science program. The grant supports him and four other developers, Tamás Nepusz, Szabolcs Horvát, Vincent Traag and Fabio Zanini, and aims at a 1.0 release of igraph's C core with a stable, well-documented API.
-
May 2026
OpenTelemetry for R packages
In May 2026, Posit publishes a post on bringing OpenTelemetry to R, with him among its four authors. It covers instrumented packages including Shiny, plumber2, mirai, httr2 and ellmer, whose traces include LLM API calls, tool execution and token usage.

August 2026
The igraph 1.0 paper
PLOS One publishes “igraph 1.0 enables fast and robust network analysis across programming languages” in August 2026, with him among its ten authors. The paper presents igraph 1.0, released after twenty years of development, and reports over a million monthly downloads.
-
As of October 2026
Senior software engineer at Posit
He is a Senior Software Engineer at Posit, based in Barcelona, and works on open source R packages and other tools for data scientists and R developers, including pak, cli, processx, ps and pkgdepends. His April 2026 release of processx 3.9.0 adds kernel-level process pipelines and pseudo-terminal support on Windows.
