Researcher

Gabor Fichtinger

Gabor Fichtinger is a computer scientist whose work applies AI and robotics to image-guided surgery. He earned electrical engineering degrees at the Technical University of Budapest in 1986 and 1988 and a computer science doctorate there in 1990; he became a tenured professor at Queen’s in 2010. IEEE elected him a Fellow in 2016, Queen’s awarded him its Prize for Excellence in Research in 2020, and AIMBE elected him to its College of Fellows in 2022. In March 2025, Queen’s renewed his Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Computer-Assisted Surgery; he was developing AI-driven tools for image-guided interventions and improving point-of-care ultrasound imaging for obstructive kidney disease and prostate cancer, and in 2026 he coauthored a paper on agent-guided concepts for surgical-margin assessment. As of October 2026, he is a Professor of Computer Science and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Computer-Integrated Surgery at Queen’s University.

Timeline

  1. 1986–1990

    Degrees in Budapest

He earns BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1986 and 1988, then a doctorate in Computer Science at the Technical University of Budapest in 1990.

  2. 2010

    Professor with tenure

In 2010, he becomes a Professor with tenure at Queen’s School of Computing.

  3. 2016

    IEEE Fellow

IEEE elects him a Fellow in 2016 for contributions to medical robotics and computer-assisted intervention.

  4. 2020

    A research excellence prize

In 2020, Queen’s awards him its Prize for Excellence in Research for contributions to computational image guidance in surgery and free open-source software for computer-assisted cancer diagnosis and treatment.

  5. 2022

    AIMBE College of Fellows

In 2022, AIMBE elects him to its College of Fellows for contributions to computational image guidance in medical interventions. At Queen’s, he directs the Perk Lab and focuses on computational imaging and robotic guidance for surgery and interventions.

  6. March 2025

    AI tools for surgery

In March 2025, Queen’s renews his Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Computer-Assisted Surgery. He develops AI-driven tools for image-guided interventions, and his research improves point-of-care ultrasound imaging to diagnose and treat obstructive kidney diseases and prostate cancer.

  7. 2026

    AI for surgical margins

In 2026, he coauthors Agent-Guided Relational Concept Discovery, a paper that proposes a framework for learning meaningful concepts from data for surgical-margin assessment.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Queen’s

As of October 2026, he is a Professor of Computer Science and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Computer-Integrated Surgery at Queen’s University.
