Fredrik Gustafsson
Fredrik Gustafsson is a professor in Sensor Informatics at Linköping University whose research includes stochastic signal processing, adaptive filtering and wildlife applications. He earned an M.Sc. in electrical engineering in 1988 and a Ph.D. in automatic control in 1992 at Linköping University, held automatic-control posts from 1992 to 1999, and became professor of Communication Systems in 1999. His 2002 particle-filter paper addressed positioning, navigation and tracking; his 2024 camera-trap study used machine learning to track animal classes, and his 2025 work applied open-set recognition to wildlife images. His awards include the 2004 Arnberg Prize, election to the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2007 and IEEE Fellow status in 2011; he held a Swedish Research Council Distinguished Professorship from 2015 to 2024. He co-founded Nira Dynamics, Senion and Softube, and joined the Research2Business steering group in 2023.

Timeline
-
1988–1999
Degrees and early appointments
In 1988, he earns an M.Sc. in electrical engineering, and in 1992 he completes a Ph.D. in automatic control, both at Linköping University. From 1992 to 1999, he holds positions in automatic control before becoming professor of Communication Systems at Linköping University in 1999.
-
2002
Particle filters for navigation
In 2002, he coauthors “Particle filters for positioning, navigation and tracking” through Linköping University's ISIS Sensor Fusion project. The Division of Automatic Control and Communication Systems carries out the project, which focuses on target tracking, navigation and positioning.
-
2004–2011
Prizes and academy honors
The Royal Swedish Academy of Science awards him the Arnberg Prize in 2004. The Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences elects him as a member in 2007, and he becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2011 for contributions to theory and applications of statistical signal processing.
-
2015–2024
A distinguished professorship
From 2015 to 2024, he holds a Swedish Research Council Distinguished Professorship.
-
2023
Companies and steering group
In 2023, he joins the Research2Business steering group. He is a co-founder of the research-based companies Nira Dynamics, which develops car tire-pressure measurement; Senion, which develops indoor navigation for mobile phones; and Softube, which develops music-production technology.
-
2024
Machine-learning animal tracking
In 2024, he coauthors a paper that uses object-detection outputs in a filtering method to track animals and their classes across images. The study tests the method on camera-trap images of bears, lynxes, wolves and wolverines, and reports more robust classification.
-
2025
Wildlife open-set recognition
In 2025, he coauthors a paper on wildlife open-set recognition, which aims to classify known classes while rejecting unknown samples. It compares a nearest-class-mean distribution with softmax probabilities from model logits to measure agreement.
-
Since 2005
Professor in Sensor Informatics
He is professor in Sensor Informatics in Linköping University's Department of Electrical Engineering, a post he has held since 2005. His research interests include stochastic signal processing, adaptive filtering and change detection, with applications that include wildlife.
