Francesco Ciompi
Francesco Ciompi is a computational pathology researcher who develops AI to analyze histopathology images. He studied electronic engineering at Pisa and computer vision and AI at Barcelona, completed a PhD in applied mathematics at Barcelona in 2012, joined Radboudumc in 2013, and began co-leading its Computational Pathology Group in 2016. Radboudumc appointed him associate professor in 2022, where his team developed deep-learning neural networks. In 2024, he explained how Radboudumc's Grand Challenge platform could host algorithms and shared the Ammodo Science Award with Jeroen van der Laak and Geert Litjens; in 2025, he coauthored a whole-slide compression paper for pathologist-level prescreening. As of October 2026, he leads a newly established Computational Pathology Group at the Computer Vision Center.
