Researcher

Fabio Rinaldi

Fabio Rinaldi is a computational linguist whose natural language processing work helps researchers extract biomedical information from text. At the University of Zurich, he served as a lecturer and senior researcher, led a biomedical text mining group, and worked on OntoGene and ODIN, a tool for literature curation. His research includes dependency-based extraction of biomedical relations and BUST, a 2024 benchmark for detectors of text generated by instruction-tuned language models. As of October 2026, he is a senior researcher in NLP and information retrieval at IDSIA USI-SUPSI, leads the BioMeXT group at SIB, and is PI of M2P2, a project on privacy-preserving multilingual NLP for clinical records.

Timeline

  1. 2005–2020

    Senior researcher at Zurich

From 2005 to 2020, he serves as a lecturer and senior researcher at the University of Zurich, where he establishes and leads a biomedical text mining group.

  2. 2008

    Mining biomedical relations

In 2008, he coauthors a paper that uses dependency parsing and syntax-based filters to detect relationships among genes, proteins and diseases in biomedical literature.

  3. 2010

    Visiting Tokyo's NLP lab

In 2010, he spends nearly a year as a visiting researcher at Professor Jun'ichi Tsujii's former lab at Tokyo University.

  4. By 2014

    OntoGene and ODIN at UZH

By 2014, he holds an MSc in computer science from the University of Udine and a PhD in computational linguistics from the University of Zurich. He leads the OntoGene group at UZH and serves as principal investigator of SASEBio, which applies text mining to biomedical database curation, and presents ODIN, an interactive tool for curators.

  5. 2016–2019

    Visiting the RegulonDB group

From 2016 to 2019, he holds an additional appointment as a visiting research professor with the RegulonDB group at the National University of Mexico, as part of an NIH-sponsored project.

  6. 2024

    Benchmarking LLM text detectors

In 2024, he coauthors BUST, a benchmark that evaluates detectors of text generated by instruction-tuned language models.

  7. As of October 2026

    Leading clinical NLP research

He is a senior researcher in NLP and information retrieval at IDSIA USI-SUPSI and leads SIB's BioMeXT group in biomedical information extraction. The group works on research literature, clinical records and social media; he is principal investigator of M2P2, which runs from March 2025 to February 2028 and develops privacy-preserving multilingual NLP for clinical records.
