Evan Chen

Also known as 陳誼廷, vEnhance

Evan Chen is a number theorist and math Olympiad coach whose work connects competition mathematics with AI evaluation. He won a gold medal for Taiwan at the 2014 International Mathematical Olympiad and published a Euclidean geometry contest textbook in 2016. He coauthored FrontierMath, an advanced-mathematics AI benchmark, in 2024 and completed a number theory PhD at MIT in 2025. In 2026, his work with Ken Ono includes a paper on Kaprekar dynamics whose proof AxiomProver formalizes in Lean and a paper proving Thakur's hypotheses; as of October 2026, he runs OTIS, serves as OMEGA Head Writer, and consults for Axiom Math.

Timeline

  1. 2014

    Gold medal at the IMO

In 2014, he wins a gold medal for Taiwan at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

  2. 2016

    Euclidean geometry textbook

He publishes Euclidean Geometry in Mathematical Olympiads through the Mathematical Association of America in 2016, a problem-solving book in Euclidean geometry for contest students.

  3. November 2024

    FrontierMath and AI evaluation

In November 2024, he coauthors FrontierMath, a benchmark of hundreds of original, exceptionally challenging problems crafted and vetted by expert mathematicians to evaluate advanced mathematical reasoning in AI. The paper reports that leading AI models solve under 2% of the problems.

  4. 2025

    MIT number theory PhD

In 2025, he completes a number theory PhD at MIT with a thesis on weighted orbital integrals and arithmetic fundamental lemmas. Wei Zhang supervises his thesis.

  5. June 2026–July 2026

    Kaprekar dynamics in odd bases

In June 2026, he coauthors Four-digit Kaprekar dynamics in odd bases with Ken Ono, Richard E. Schwartz and Dinesh S. Thakur. AxiomProver autonomously constructs the proof from the problem statement and formalizes it in Lean.

  6. August 2026

    Thakur's hypotheses on power sums

In August 2026, he and Ken Ono coauthor a paper proving Thakur's three hypotheses on power sums with a base-q carry argument.

  7. As of October 2026

    OTIS, OMEGA and Axiom Math

As of October 2026, he continues to run OTIS and coach math Olympiad students, serves as Head Writer for OMEGA for 2026–2027, and consults for Axiom Math. He completes his third year as an on-site coordinator at IMO 2026.
