Researcher

Etienne Lefebvre

Also known as Étienne Lefebvre

Etienne Lefebvre is a researcher whose Louvain method finds communities in large networks. He developed it during an applied-mathematics master's project at the Catholic University of Louvain in 2007 and coauthored English and French papers about it in 2008. Its project offers original and updated C++ code, and a partition-stability implementation builds on Louvain code credited to Lefebvre and Jean-Loup Guillaume; the method's name first appeared in print in September 2009. The 2008 paper had 20,054 Google Scholar citations by July 2023, and a 2023 review thanked Lefebvre for originating the method. In October 2023, he was a Senior Project Manager at EQUANS Offshore.

Timeline

  1. 2007

    A Louvain master's project

In 2007, the Louvain method develops during Etienne Lefebvre's applied-mathematics master's project with three researchers at the Catholic University of Louvain. His project starts from synthetic networks with communities; by reversing the process, he discovers the method.

  2. 2008

    Fast unfolding communities

In 2008, he coauthors “Fast unfolding of communities in large networks,” a heuristic that extracts communities through modularity optimization. The paper tests it on a Belgian mobile-phone network with 2.6 million customers and a web graph with 118 million nodes and more than one billion links. The Louvain project offers original and updated C++ code, and a partition-stability implementation builds on Louvain code credited to him and Jean-Loup Guillaume.

  3. 2008

    A French conference paper

At ALGOTEL in 2008, he coauthors the French-language paper “Identification multi-échelle de la structure communautaire de très grands graphes” with Vincent D. Blondel, Jean-Loup Guillaume and Renaud Lambiotte.

  4. September 2009

    Naming the Louvain method

The term “Louvain method” first appears in an article published in September 2009.

  5. July 2023

    20,054 Google Scholar citations

On July 6, 2023, the 2008 paper reaches 20,054 Google Scholar citations.

  6. 2023

A review of the Louvain method

The authors of a 2023 review thank him for originating the Louvain method and note it remains his only publication as a master's student. The review describes the method as implemented in standard graph-mining libraries and at the core of network science.

  7. October 2023

    Senior project manager at EQUANS

In October 2023, he is a Senior Project Manager at EQUANS Offshore.
