Estibaliz Garrote

Also known as Estíbaliz Garrote, Estíbaliz Garrote Contreras

Estibaliz Garrote is a computer vision researcher whose work spans biomedical image analysis, action recognition and quantum sensing. She began in artificial vision at ROBOTIKER in 2000 and worked with research groups at MIT, Cambridge, Newcastle, Brown and the University of Quebec at Montreal between 2008 and 2019. In 2014, she led BIOSIMIL, an image-search project for biobank samples that received the EARTO Innovation Prize. At UPV/EHU, she became an academic research collaborator in 2020, and her HMDB work received the Helmholtz Prize in 2021 and the Mark Everingham Prize in 2022. In 2024 and 2025, she coauthored AI work on quantum sensing and robotic inspection; as of October 2026, she is a principal researcher in TECNALIA's NEXT Quantum group.

Timeline

  1. 2000

    Artificial vision at ROBOTIKER

In 2000, she starts work in artificial vision at ROBOTIKER.

  2. 2008–2019

    Research visits in computer vision

In 2008, she joins Tomaso Poggio's Center for Biological & Computational Learning at MIT. From 2009 to 2010, her research stays include Cambridge's Vision Lab, Newcastle's Institute of Neurosciences, and Brown University; in June 2019, she visits the University of Quebec at Montreal for deep-learning research.

  3. 2014

    Directing BIOSIMIL

In 2014, she leads BIOSIMIL, a search engine that helps researchers find medical and biological samples through images in biobanks. The project receives the European EARTO Innovation Prize.

  4. 2020

    Academic collaborator at UPV/EHU

In 2020, UPV/EHU names her an academic research collaborator in its Department of Cell Biology and Histology for biomedical image processing. At TECNALIA, she is responsible for its Computer Vision & Visual Interaction technology; she holds a cum laude doctorate and degrees in physical sciences and electronic engineering.

  5. 2021–2022

    Two prizes for HMDB

In 2021, she receives the Helmholtz Prize from IEEE PAMI for her work on HMDB. In 2022, she receives the Mark Everingham Prize for participating in HMDB's creation with MIT's team.

  6. 2024–2025

AI for quantum sensing and robotics

In 2024, she coauthors a Physical Review Letters paper on a signal-to-image AI model for detecting nuclear spins at arbitrary magnetic fields. In 2025, she coauthors work on hybrid quantum-classical algorithms for planning robotic quality-inspection routes.

  7. As of October 2026

    Principal researcher at TECNALIA

As of October 2026, she is a principal researcher in TECNALIA's NEXT Quantum group. She works on signal detection and processing for magnetic-field and atomic-sensing systems.
