Enrique Vidal Ruiz
Also known as Enrique Vidal-Ruis, Enrique Vidal
Enrique Vidal Ruiz is a researcher in pattern recognition whose AI work links speech translation with handwritten-text recognition and manuscript digitization. He earned a doctorate in physical sciences in 1985 and became a professor at Universitat Politècnica de València in 1990. His group led a speech-to-speech machine-translation project at ITI-UPV from 1996 to 2000, and IAPR named him a Fellow in 1996 for contributions to syntactic pattern recognition. He received the 2011 Premio Aritmel al informático del año for scientific contributions to engineering informatics and joined the team behind Transkriptorium, a 2020 UPV spin-off for AI-based manuscript transcription and indexing. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor at UPV and a founder of Transkriptorium.

1996–2000
The EuTrans translation project
His group at the Computer Science Institute of the Universitat Politècnica de València leads a speech-to-speech machine-translation project. Its first stage lasts six months in 1996, and its second runs from 1997 to 2000. The team develops methods for real tasks and three learning techniques for EuTrans prototypes.

The Aritmel informatics award
He receives the 2011 Premio Aritmel al informático del año for scientific contributions to engineering informatics.
-
2020
A Transkriptorium spin-off
He is part of the team promoting Transkriptorium, formed as a UPV spin-off in 2020 to transcribe and index digitized handwritten documents. Its machine-learning and artificial-intelligence technology reaches content from thousands of old manuscript pages.
