Eneida A. Mendonça
Eneida Mendonça is a biomedical informatics researcher whose work applies natural language processing to patient records and clinical decision support. She earned an MD in Brazil and a Columbia doctorate in biomedical informatics in 2002, then coauthored an ACL workshop paper on ranking literature with patient data. She served as principal investigator on a 2009 University of Chicago NLP project, joined the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics in 2020, and became director of Regenstrief’s Clem McDonald Center in 2021. She joined the American Pediatric Society in 2025 and coauthored a 2026 paper on clinical evaluation and integration of biomedical multimodal large language models. She directs Cincinnati Children’s Division of Biomedical Informatics, holds the Rieveschl Chair, and is a professor in the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Pediatrics.

Timeline
-
1987–2002
Medical and informatics training
She earns an MD from the Federal University of Pelotas in 1987, an MS in medicine (cardiology) from the University Foundation of Cardiology in 1996, and a PhD in biomedical informatics from Columbia University in 2002. She completes pediatrics residencies at São Lucas Hospital in 1988 and 1990.
-
2002
NLP for literature retrieval
She coauthors “Analyzing the Semantics of patient data to rank records of literature retrieval” for the ACL-02 Workshop on Natural Language Processing in the Biomedical Domain in 2002 with Stephen Johnson, Yoon-ho Seol, and James Cimino.
-
2009
Answering information needs in workflow
In 2009, she is an associate professor in pediatrics at the University of Chicago’s Computation Institute and principal investigator for an NIH-funded project, “Answering Information Needs in Workflow.” Its planned search system uses natural language processing to identify context, goals, and preferences in clinicians’ questions and build search strategies around them.
-
March 2019–October 2021
Directing the Clem McDonald Center
In March 2019, she joins Regenstrief as vice president for Research Development, after serving as an associate professor in the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine and Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics and Department of Pediatrics. She serves as interim director of the Clem McDonald Center for Biomedical Informatics from October 2019 and becomes its director in October 2021. Her research applies language-driven methods and automated learning to support decisions and extract biomedical data from patient records.
-
2020
A 2020 IAHSI fellowship
She becomes a Fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics as part of its 2020 class. The Academy recognizes expertise in biomedical and health informatics internationally.
-
2025
American Pediatric Society membership
She joins the American Pediatric Society as a new member in 2025.
-
2026
Biomedical multimodal LLMs
She coauthors a 2026 Journal of Biomedical Informatics paper on “Biomedical multimodal large language models: From model-centric development to clinically grounded evaluation and integration.”
-
As of October 2026
Director of biomedical informatics
She directs Cincinnati Children’s Division of Biomedical Informatics, holds the Rieveschl Chair of Biomedical Informatics, and is a professor in UC’s Department of Pediatrics.
