Researcher

Edward Epstein

Also known as Eddie Epstein

Edward Epstein is an AI researcher whose work connects IBM Watson question answering with software vulnerability detection. In 2010, he contributed to Watson's DeepQA system and helped scale its computation for Jeopardy in 2012. The IBM Watson team shared the 2013 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize with him, and he coauthored the D2A vulnerability dataset in 2021. He coauthored work on fault-tolerant cloud actors in 2023 and a D2A study using machine-learning and deep-learning models in 2024, while affiliated with IBM.

Timeline

  1. 2010

    IBM's DeepQA team

In 2010, he contributes to IBM's team developing Watson and its DeepQA architecture for question answering.

  2. 2012

    Scaling Watson across cores

In 2012, he scales Watson's computation across thousands of cores for live Jeopardy games and manages the IBM team developing Apache UIMA, which Watson uses.

  3. 2013

    The AAAI Feigenbaum Prize

He shares the 2013 Feigenbaum Prize with the IBM Watson team for showing that symbolic knowledge representation, natural-language understanding, and statistical machine learning can achieve human-level performance in real-time factual question-answering.

  4. 2021

    The D2A vulnerability dataset

In 2021, he coauthors D2A, a dataset designed to train models for software vulnerability identification from static-analysis findings.

  5. 2023

    Reliable actors for cloud software

In 2023, he coauthors a fault-tolerant cloud programming model based on actors, retry orchestration, and tail calls.

  6. 2024

    Machine learning for D2A

In 2024, he coauthors a D2A study using classic machine-learning and deep-learning models for vulnerability identification. He is IBM-affiliated at publication time.
