Edward A. Fox

Also known as Edward Alan Fox

Edward A. Fox is a computer scientist whose work brought artificial intelligence methods to information retrieval and helped build digital libraries. He earned degrees at MIT and Cornell, published a 1987 paper framing CODER as an AI testbed, and served as vice chair and chair of ACM SIGIR from 1987 to 1995. In 1993, he coauthored a paper about MARIAN for online library catalogs and directed Virginia Tech's 1996 National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations project. He became a Fellow of ACM and IEEE in 2017 and entered the SIGIR Academy in 2021; he is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Virginia Tech and Executive Director of NDLTD.

  1. 1972–1983

    Degrees at MIT and Cornell

    He earns a B.S. at MIT in 1972. At Cornell, he completes M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with Gerard Salton, earning his Ph.D. in 1983.

  2. 1987

    CODER for AI retrieval

    In 1987, he publishes a paper that frames CODER as a testbed for artificial intelligence methods in information retrieval.

  3. 1987–1995

    Leading ACM SIGIR

    From 1987 to 1995, he serves first as vice chair and then chair of ACM's Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval.

  4. 1993

    MARIAN for library catalogs

    In 1993, he and four coauthors describe MARIAN for large online library catalogs, with a distributed server, an object-oriented database, and iterative usability testing.

  5. 1996

    Directing the NDLTD project

    In September 1996, he directs Virginia Tech's National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations project and coauthors a D-Lib overview.

  6. 2017

    ACM and IEEE Fellowships

    In 2017, he becomes a Fellow of both ACM and IEEE for leadership and contributions in information retrieval and digital libraries.

  7. 2021

    An inaugural SIGIR Academy induction

    ACM SIGIR honors him as an inaugural inductee in 2021.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor emeritus and NDLTD director

    In December 2024, he retires from Virginia Tech and serves as Professor Emeritus of Computer Science. As of October 2026, he serves as Executive Director of NDLTD.
