Lab leader

Ebtesam Almazrouei

Ebtesam Almazrouei is an AI researcher and lab leader whose work spans wireless communication, edge machine learning, and open language models. She coauthored studies of indoor Wi-Fi localization and radio-signal denoising, then a 2022 assessment of NOOR's carbon footprint. In 2023, she coauthored a review of edge machine learning and the Falcon series report; TII released Falcon 180B in September 2023. H2O.ai named her to its inaugural AI 100 in 2024. She holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence for Wireless Communication Engineering and Computer Science, and as of October 2026 she is Executive Director of Abu Dhabi's Office of AI and Advanced Technology, chairs the UN AI for Good Impact Initiative, and leads AIE3 as CEO and founder.

Timeline

  1. 2018

    Indoor Wi-Fi localization

In 2018, she coauthors a study on cooperative indoor Wi-Fi localization using the Sparse Finite Semi Definite Program and real radio measurements.

  2. 2019

    Radio signal denoising

In 2019, she coauthors a paper that uses a convolutional denoising autoencoder to clean IEEE 802.11 protocol preambles for protocol classification.

  3. 2022

    NOOR's carbon footprint

In 2022, she coauthors an assessment of NOOR's carbon footprint published at the BigScience workshop. The study covers data collection, research and development, pretraining, future serving, and other costs.

  4. 2023

    Edge ML and Falcon 180B

In 2023, she coauthors a review of edge machine learning and The Falcon Series of Open Language Models. The review examines Edge ML requirements, paradigms, and techniques; the Falcon report says Falcon-180B is trained on over 3.5 trillion text tokens. In September 2023, TII releases Falcon 180B for research and commercial use; Almazrouei is Executive Director and Acting Chief Researcher of its AI Cross-Center Unit.

  5. 2024

    H2O.ai's inaugural AI 100

In 2024, she is named to H2O.ai's inaugural AI 100 list in its AI for Good/Research Scientist category.

  6. By 2026

    A PhD in AI

She holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence for Wireless Communication Engineering and Computer Science.

  7. January 2026

    AI genetic screening

At a panel in January 2026, she reports three successful stories in the first month of the AI-enabled genetic-screening programme launched in 2025.

  8. As of October 2026

    Executive Director in Abu Dhabi

As of October 2026, she serves as Executive Director of Abu Dhabi's Office of AI and Advanced Technology. She chairs the UN AI for Good Impact Initiative and is CEO and founder of AIE3.
