Edsger W. Dijkstra
Also known as E. Dijkstra, Edsger Wybe Dijkstra, Edsger Dijkstra, E. W. Dijkstra, E.W. Dijkstra
Edsger W. Dijkstra was a computer scientist whose shortest-route algorithm became part of AI search as uniform-cost search. He studied mathematics and theoretical physics at Leiden, worked at Mathematisch Centrum in Amsterdam, and helped write the first ALGOL 60 compiler. At Eindhoven, he developed the THE operating system and published Cooperating Sequential Processes, a work that helped establish concurrent programming; he held the Schlumberger Centennial Chair at the University of Texas at Austin from 1984 to 1999. He received the 1972 ACM Turing Award and died in 2002.
Timeline
-
1952–1962
Leiden and Mathematisch Centrum
He studies mathematics and theoretical physics at Leiden, and works as a programmer at Mathematisch Centrum in Amsterdam from 1952 to 1962. With Jaap Zonneveld, he writes the first ALGOL 60 compiler.
-
1956–1959
Shortest paths and AI search
He demonstrates the shortest-route algorithm on ARMAC in 1956 and publishes it in a 1959 paper. In artificial intelligence, uniform-cost search uses the same shortest-route method to expand paths by cost.
-
1962
Professor at Eindhoven
He becomes a professor in Eindhoven’s Mathematics Department in 1962 and develops the THE operating system.
-
1968
Cooperating Sequential Processes
He publishes Cooperating Sequential Processes in 1968; the paper helps establish the design of operating systems and the field of concurrent programming.
-
1972
The ACM Turing Award
In 1972, he receives the ACM Turing Award for his approach to programming as a high intellectual challenge.
-
1973–1984
Burroughs Research Fellow
From 1973 to 1984, he serves as Burroughs Corporation’s only research fellow. He works from home and keeps his Eindhoven professorship for one day each week.
-
1984–1999
A chair at UT Austin
He takes the Schlumberger Centennial Chair in Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin in 1984 and retires as Professor Emeritus in 1999.
-
2002
Death in Nuenen
He dies at his home in Nuenen in August 2002.
