Dwijesh Dutta Majumder

Also known as Dwijesh Kr. Dutta Majumder

Dwijesh Dutta Majumder was a researcher whose work connected artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, image processing and computer vision. He earned a physics degree in 1952 and an MSc in 1955, joined the Indian Statistical Institute in 1961, and completed his PhD in 1963. At ISI, he became a professor and helped build the ISI-JU-1 computer. He published on AI and vision in 1988, became an IAPR Fellow in 1994, and coauthored a neuro-fuzzy study of cervical-cancer detection in 2019. He died in 2020.

  1. 1952–1963

    Physics and radio electronics

    He earns a BSc (Hons) in physics at Guwahati University in 1952, then completes an MSc (Tech) in 1955 and a PhD in Radio Physics and Electronics in 1963 at Calcutta University.

  2. 1961

    Building the ISI-JU-1

    He joins the Indian Statistical Institute as a Senior Research Engineer in 1961 and rises to become Professor and Chairman of its National Centre of Knowledge Based Computing. He also helps build ISI-JU-1, the first transistorised computer in India.

  3. 1964

    Michigan research visit

    In 1964, he visits the University of Michigan on a UNDP Fellowship and works with N. R. Scott on computer system design, pattern recognition and computer and human memory.

  4. 1988

    An AI and vision paper

    In 1988, he publishes an Information Sciences paper titled “A unified approach to artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, image processing and computer vision in fifth-generation computer systems.”

  5. 1994

    An IAPR fellowship

    In 1994, he becomes an IAPR Fellow for contributions to pattern recognition, image processing, computer vision and artificial intelligence, and for service to the IAPR.

  6. 2019

    Neuro-fuzzy cancer detection

    In 2019, he coauthors a study that develops a neuro-fuzzy network for early detection of cervical cancer.

  7. 2020

    Death in 2020

    He dies in 2020.
