Researcher

Dimitra Tsovaltzi

Dimitra Tsovaltzi is a researcher in affective AI and technology-assisted learning. Her early research covered automated mathematical tutoring and learning from erroneous examples, and she later studied collaborative learning on Facebook. Her later research included mixed-reality teacher training, teacher-student co-regulation, and emotional models for industrial robots. Since April 2026, she leads DFKI’s MARSS project, which applies multimodal AI to help students identify misinformation and emotional manipulation in digital media.

Timeline

  1. 2003

    Automating tutorial hints

She coauthors a 2003 workshop paper on automating hints for mathematical tutorial dialogue with Armin Fiedler.

  2. 2010

    A virtual chemistry lab script

In 2010, she coauthors a study that uses a collaboration script to promote conceptual learning in a virtual chemistry lab. Her work also explores learning from erroneous examples.

  3. 2015

    Argumentation on Facebook

She coauthors a 2015 study of argumentation scripts, individual preparation, and group-awareness support for learning on Facebook.

  4. 2021–2024

    MITHOS mixed-reality training

DFKI’s MITHOS project runs from 2021 to 2024 and gives teachers mixed-reality practice for classroom conflicts. In 2024, she coauthors a chapter that presents the system’s four stages and a semi-automatic Wizard-of-Oz implementation.

  5. 2025

    A seminar on social computers

At Saarland University, she teaches the summer 2025 seminar “How to build a social computer?”

  6. 2025

    The InCoRe model

She coauthors InCoRe in 2025, an interactive co-regulation model for teacher-student communication that uses a psychological model to automate interaction with a virtual student.

  7. 2025

    Emotional co-regulation for robots

In 2025, she coauthors BASSF, a model for socially interactive industrial robots that uses emotional signals to guide co-regulation between a worker, robot, and avatar.

  8. Since April 2026

    Leading the MARSS project

Since April 2026, she leads DFKI’s MARSS project. It combines multimodal AI and explainable AI to help students identify misinformation and emotional manipulation in digital media.
