Michael Tomasello

Michael Tomasello is a psychologist whose research covers cognitive processes in primates and language acquisition in humans. He studied psychology at Duke University, held a professorship at Emory University, and in 1998 was appointed co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. He received a Heineken Prize for Cognitive Science in 2010 and the Rumelhart Prize in 2021. A 2025 paper in Trends in Cognitive Sciences argues that the quest to make AI models more human-like could profit from studying biological agents and their evolution. As of October 2026 he is a Distinguished Professor at Duke.
