Claude Laurgeau
Claude Laurgeau is a French roboticist whose work connected robotics, machine perception and intelligent transport. He taught at the University of Nantes from 1975 to 1982 and directed the IT Agency's robotics research department from 1982 to 1987, then founded Mines Paris's CAOR in 1988 and led it until February 2008. At CAOR, his team developed RTMaps in 1998 while researchers explored computer vision and Bayesian-network data fusion for vehicle perception, and he co-founded Intempora with Bruno Steux in 2000. Mines Paris demonstrated the LaRA autonomous vehicle with RTMaps onboard in 2002, and he received the Engelberger Robotics Award in 2004. As of October 2026, he is an Intempora co-founder who continues to give conferences on robotics and autonomous driving.
Timeline
-
1975–1987
From Nantes to the IT Agency
He teaches at the University of Nantes from 1975 to 1982, then directs the "Productive robotics research" department at the IT Agency from 1982 to 1987.
-
1988–February 2008
Founding Mines Paris CAOR
He founds the Centre de Robotique (CAOR) at Mines Paris in 1988 and directs it until February 2008.
-
1998
Developing RTMaps
His CAOR team develops RTMaps at Mines Paris in 1998 for robotics and intelligent transport systems.
-
1998–2000
Intempora and vehicle perception
His team includes PhD students Bruno Steux and Pierre Coulombeau, who aim to develop computer-vision algorithms and Bayesian-network data fusion for vehicle perception and positioning. He co-founds Intempora with Steux in 2000 from work at CAOR.
-
2002
The LaRA autonomous vehicle
At the IEEE Intelligent Vehicle Symposium in Versailles in 2002, Mines Paris demonstrates the LaRA autonomous vehicle with RTMaps as its onboard data-processing software.
-
2004
An Engelberger Award
He receives the Joseph F. Engelberger Robotics Award in 2004.
-
March 2016
Leading VEDECOM
At a connected and autonomous car event in March 2016, he is president of VEDECOM and founder of Mines ParisTech's robotics center.
