Researcher

Claude Crépeau

Claude Crépeau is a computer scientist whose work spans cryptographic protocols, zero-knowledge proofs and quantum computing. He began work in cryptography in 1983, earned degrees at Université de Montréal and MIT, and pursued research in Paris. With five collaborators, he coauthored a 1993 quantum teleportation paper; his 1988 paper on unconditionally secure multiparty protocols received an ACM STOC Test of Time Award in 2021. After twenty-six years at McGill, he joined ÉTS in 2025 and coauthored a review of quantum cryptography beyond key distribution. As of October 2026, he is an ÉTS professor; he joined an ACM committee in July 2026 to select the next editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Quantum Computing.

Timeline

  1. 1983

    Cryptography and zero-knowledge proofs

He begins work in cryptography in 1983. His theoretical research focuses on cryptographic protocols, including zero-knowledge proofs.

  2. 1984–1986

    Studying computer science in Montréal

He earns a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science at Université de Montréal in 1984, then a master's degree in computer science in 1986.

  3. 1991–2005

    Doctoral and postdoctoral research

After a computer science PhD at MIT, he undertakes postdoctoral research at Paris-Sud and joins the CNRS in Paris in 1991. In 1993, he coauthors the paper “Teleporting an unknown quantum state via dual classical and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen channels” with five researchers and remains at CNRS through 2005.

  4. 2021

An ACM Test of Time Award

His 1988 paper on unconditionally secure multiparty protocols earns an ACM STOC Test of Time Award in 2021.

  5. 2025

    From McGill to ÉTS

He serves at McGill for twenty-six years. In January 2025, he joins ÉTS to help develop the Quantum Science and Engineering Institute. He coauthors a 2025 review of quantum cryptography beyond key distribution and secure quantum computation.

  6. As of October 2026

Professor at ÉTS and ACM committee

In July 2026, he joins an ACM committee to select the next editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Quantum Computing. In autumn 2026, he supervises a project on quantum identification for the QEYSSat communication satellite. As of October 2026, he is a professor in ÉTS's Department of Software Engineering and IT.
