Chris Buckley

Also known as Christopher D. Buckley

Chris Buckley is an Oxford rheumatology researcher whose clinical research infrastructure supports evaluation of AI-based diagnostic and decision-support tools. He earned a first-class biochemistry degree at Oxford, an MB BS in London and a DPhil at Oxford, and held research leadership roles in Birmingham and Oxford. His work identified fibroblast subsets involved in arthritis inflammation and tissue damage and mapped cellular responses to anti-TNF treatment in inflammatory bowel disease. He received the 2020 Carol Nachman Prize and was named to lead Oxford’s Experimental Medicine Collaboration with GSK in November 2025. He is Kennedy Professor of Translational Rheumatology and Director of the NIHR Oxford Clinical Research Facility as of October 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1985–1996

    Oxford and London degrees

He earns a first-class BA in biochemistry at Oxford in 1985, an MB BS at the University of London in 1990, and a DPhil in medicine at Oxford in 1996.

  2. 2002–2012

    Birmingham research leadership

He becomes Arthritis Research UK Professor of Rheumatology in 2002 and Director of Birmingham's NIHR Clinical Research Facility in 2012.

  3. 2017–2019

    A-TAP and arthritis fibroblasts

In May 2017, he takes a joint academic post between Birmingham and Oxford to direct A-TAP through Birmingham Health Partners. In 2019, he coauthors a Nature study that identifies fibroblast subsets linked to inflammation or tissue damage in arthritis.

  4. 2020

    A Carol Nachman Prize

He receives the 2020 Carol Nachman Prize for Rheumatology.

  5. 2021

    Kennedy Institute director

He moves to the Kennedy Institute as Director of Clinical Research in 2021.

  6. 2024

    A therapeutic atlas

In 2024, he is co-senior author of an Oxford study that uses single-cell RNA sequencing to examine anti-TNF response in inflammatory bowel disease. The study creates a therapeutic atlas to help scientists compare treatment responses across autoimmune diseases.

  7. November 2025

    Oxford–GSK collaboration

In November 2025, he leads Oxford's Experimental Medicine Collaboration with GSK as the EMCRF director and NIHR Oxford BRC Theme Lead for Inflammation Across Tissues.

  8. As of October 2026

    Oxford CRF director

He is Kennedy Professor of Translational Rheumatology and Director of the NIHR Oxford Clinical Research Facility. In March 2026, funding for new infrastructure includes servers for OxCAIR, which evaluates commercially available AI-based diagnostic and decision-support tools in the clinical setting.
