Researcher

Cesare Alippi

Cesare Alippi is a researcher in adaptive and graph-based machine learning. He earned an M.Eng. in electrical engineering and a PhD in computer and control engineering at Politecnico di Milano, held research posts at University College London and Italy’s National Research Council, and became a full professor in 2002. With Giacomo Boracchi and Manuel Roveri, he published a just-in-time adaptive classification system in 2011 and coauthored a 2015 survey of learning from changing data streams. He received the International Neural Network Society’s Dennis Gabor Award in 2016, became scientific director of IDSIA in 2023, and IEEE CIS selected him in 2023 for its 2024 Enrique Ruspini Meritorious Service Award. He coauthored the FibMap paper in 2025 and a 2026 paper that introduces Catnat; as of October 2026, he leads the Graph Machine Learning Group at IDSIA and Università della Svizzera italiana.

Timeline

  1. 1966–1995

    Engineering at Politecnico

Born in Lecco in 1966, he earns a summa cum laude M.Eng. in electrical engineering at Politecnico di Milano in 1990 and completes a PhD in computer and control engineering there in 1995.

  2. 1990–2002

    From fellow to full professor

At University College London, he serves as a research fellow from 1990 to 1992 and an honorary researcher in 1993. At Politecnico di Milano, he becomes an assistant professor in 1991. From 1996 to 1998, he is a research scientist at Italy’s National Research Council and a Reader at Politecnico; he becomes an associate professor there in 1998 and full professor in 2002.

  3. 2011–2015

    Adaptive classification and data streams

With Giacomo Boracchi and Manuel Roveri, he publishes A just-in-time adaptive classification system based on the intersection of confidence intervals rule in 2011. In 2015, he coauthors Learning in Nonstationary Environments: A Survey, which examines data streams whose distributions change over time.

  4. 2016

    The Dennis Gabor Award

He receives the International Neural Network Society’s Dennis Gabor Award in 2016.

  5. 2023–2024

IDSIA director and IEEE service award

In 2023, he becomes scientific director of the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence Studies (IDSIA), a joint USI-SUPSI institute. IEEE CIS selects him in 2023 to receive its 2024 Enrique Ruspini Meritorious Service Award for service to education and international activities.

  6. 2025

    FibMap and atrial fibrillation

In 2025, he coauthors FibMap, a graph recurrent neural network that reconstructs global atrial-fibrillation dynamics from sparse measurements.

  7. 2026

    Catnat and categorical variables

With Alessandro Manenti, he publishes Beyond Softmax: A Natural Parameterization for Categorical Random Variables at the International Conference on Machine Learning in 2026. The paper introduces catnat, a function built from hierarchical binary splits that replaces softmax.

  8. As of October 2026

Leading the Graph Machine Learning Group

As of October 2026, he leads the Graph Machine Learning Group, a research group within IDSIA at Università della Svizzera italiana.
