Researcher

Carlos Gershenson

Also known as Carlos Gershenson García, Carlos Gershenson-Garcia

Carlos Gershenson studies artificial intelligence through research on self-organizing and complex systems, including artificial life. He studied computer engineering and evolutionary and adaptive systems, earned a PhD on self-organizing systems, and held a research professorship at UNAM from 2008 to 2023. His work includes artificial-life prototypes for Mexico City transit regulation, a review of self-organization in artificial life, and a 2017 Marcos Moshinsky chair for network-topology research. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Empire Innovation at Binghamton and president of the Complex Systems Society through 2027.

Timeline

  1. 1996–2007

    A thesis on self-organization

He earns a computer-engineering degree at Fundación Arturo Rosenblueth in 2001 and an MSc in evolutionary and adaptive systems at the University of Sussex in 2002. At Vrije Universiteit Brussel, he earns a PhD summa cum laude in 2007 for a thesis on the design and control of self-organizing systems.

  2. 2007–2023

    Research professor at UNAM

After a 2007–2008 postdoctoral fellowship at the New England Complex Systems Institute, he joins UNAM as a research professor from 2008 to 2023.

  3. 2016

    Artificial life for transit

In 2016, he presents artificial-life prototypes for regulating Mexico City public transport and reports an agreement with Metro authorities to test one at Pino Suárez station.

  4. 2017

    A Marcos Moshinsky chair

UNAM awards him the 2017 Marcos Moshinsky chair for a project on network topology and how street layout affects urban mobility.

  5. 2019

    Self-organization and artificial life

He coauthors a review that maps self-organization across computational simulations, physical robots, and chemical and biological systems.

  6. 2023

    An AI appointment at Binghamton

He joins Binghamton University’s School of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering as Professor of Empire Innovation in 2023. His research focuses on using AI to improve health outcomes and the healthcare system.

  7. 2024

    Leading the Complex Systems Society

Members elect him president of the international Complex Systems Society, with his three-year term beginning in September 2024.

  8. As of October 2026
