Fionn Murtagh
Also known as Fionn D. Murtagh
Fionn Murtagh is a professor of data science at the University of Huddersfield, and his clustering work on massive, high-dimensional data links pattern recognition with astronomy. He began in Dublin as a statistician-programmer and lecturer, and from 1984 to 1996 he worked on the Hubble Space Telescope project for the European Space Agency. From 2000 to 2008, and again from 2012 to 2016, he edited The Computer Journal. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a fellow in 2008, and the International Astrostatistics Association gave him its Outstanding Contributions to Astrostatistics Award in 2016. Astronomical Image and Data Analysis, a Springer book from 2006, was co-written with Jean-Luc Starck.
