Bruce Millar
Also known as John Bruce Millar
Bruce Millar works on speech technology that spans cochlear implants and automatic speech recognition. He co-invented the Speech Processor with Graeme Clark and helped build Australia's speech research community. His research includes a method for selecting recognition-system speakers, the ANDOR interface for spoken-language data and the AVOZES audio-video corpus. He is an Emeritus Fellow at the Australian National University, a role he takes in 2010.

Timeline
-
1980–1998
The Speech Processor
He works with Graeme Clark and Joe Tong on cochlear-implant research. The Speech Processor patent covers 1980–1998 and names him and Clark as co-inventors.
-
1984–1993
Building Australia's speech community
He and John Clark propose an Australian Speech Research Conference in 1984; the first Speech Science and Technology conference takes place in 1986. ASSTA forms in 1988, with Millar as a co-founder. At the University of Melbourne, he serves as a senior staff member at the Human Communication Research Centre from 1988 to 1993.
-
1990
Selecting recognition speakers
In a 1990 paper with S. R. Hawkins, he analyses speaker characteristics in isolated-word recognition and develops an algorithm to select a training set for optimum performance across speakers.
-
1994
The ANDOR interface
In 1994, he and Dave Davies present ANDOR, an interface for remote access to the Australian National Database of Spoken Language.
-
2004
The AVOZES corpus
In 2004, he and Roland Goecke present AVOZES, a corpus for studying audio-video speech parameters in automatic speech recognition.

Emeritus Fellow at ANU
He is an ANU Emeritus Fellow, a role he takes in 2010.
