Timeline
-
2015–2017
A master's at IIT Kharagpur
He earns an MS in data science and machine learning at IIT Kharagpur from 2015 to 2017, where Prof. Animesh Mukherjee advises him in CNeRG.
-
2017–2018
Research Engineer at Walmart Labs
At Walmart Labs, he works as a research engineer from 2017 to 2018, developing a neural multimodal attribute-tagging framework that uses product descriptions and images. The work produces two US patents and an arXiv technical report.
-
2019–2021
Google AI and Team Bernard
At Google AI in summer 2019, he develops representation-learning methods for extracting information from form-like documents; the work appears as an ACL 2020 long paper. He leads UC San Diego's Team Bernard in the 2019–20 Amazon Alexa Prize, where the team becomes a finalist and receives $250,000 to research dialogue systems. He interns at Microsoft Research in 2020 and Facebook AI Research in 2021, developing clarification and personalized dialogue systems.
-
2020–2022
Practical Natural Language Processing
He coauthors Practical Natural Language Processing with Sowmya Vajjala, Anuj Gupta, and Harshit Surana for O'Reilly Media in 2020. He receives a Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship in 2020 and an Adobe Research Fellowship in 2022. UC San Diego recognizes his work with the CSE Award for Research Excellence in 2022.
-
2023
PhD and research role at Ai2
He completes a PhD in computer science and engineering at UC San Diego in 2023 with a thesis titled User-centric Natural Language Processing. He joins Ai2's Team Aristo as a research scientist in 2023.
-
2024
DiscoveryWorld for scientific agents
He coauthors DiscoveryWorld, a virtual environment for benchmarking agents through full cycles of scientific discovery, at NeurIPS 2024. Its tasks require agents to form hypotheses, design and run experiments, analyze results, and act on conclusions.
-
2025
AutoDS, CodeScientist and an ICML award
At Ai2, he coauthors AutoDS, a prototype engine for autonomous, open-ended scientific discovery, in 2025. CodeScientist uses genetic search over research articles and codeblocks to construct ideas and experiments. His position paper with Sanchaita Hazra and Tuhin Chakrabarty, AI Safety Should Prioritize the Future of Work, wins ICML's 2025 Outstanding Position Paper award.
-
As of October 2026
Senior Research Scientist at Ai2
As of October 2026, he is a Senior Research Scientist at Ai2 and leads research on autonomous data-driven discovery for Asta. In September 2026, he works with Providence researchers on AutoDiscovery, which generates and tests hypotheses across The Cancer Genome Atlas data.
