Researcher

Beidi Chen

Beidi Chen is an AI researcher who works on efficient machine learning. She earned degrees at UC Berkeley and Rice, did postdoctoral work at Stanford, and joined Carnegie Mellon University's ECE faculty in Fall 2023. Her work includes Monarch structured matrices, FlexGen for large language model inference on limited GPU memory, and later methods for structured sparsity and reinforcement learning rollouts. She received Google's Machine Learning and Systems Junior Faculty Award in 2025. As of October 2026, she is an assistant professor at CMU and a visiting research scientist at Meta's FAIR.

Timeline

  1. 2015–2020

    UC Berkeley and Rice degrees

She earns a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Berkeley in 2015 and completes a Ph.D. in computer science at Rice University in 2020.

  2. 2022

    Monarch and an ICML honor

In 2022, she coauthors Monarch: Expressive Structured Matrices for Efficient and Accurate Training, which introduces hardware-efficient structured matrices for neural-network training and fine-tuning. The paper earns an ICML Outstanding Paper Runner Up award.

  3. 2023

    Joining Carnegie Mellon

In Fall 2023, she joins Carnegie Mellon's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an assistant professor. Before the move, she holds a postdoctoral scholar appointment at Stanford University. Her research focuses on efficient machine learning.

  4. 2023

    FlexGen for one GPU

In 2023, she coauthors FlexGen, a high-throughput generation engine for large language models with limited GPU memory. It pools memory and computation from the GPU, CPU, and disk to meet different hardware constraints.

  5. 2024

    Structured sparsity for LLMs

In 2024, she coauthors Learn To be Efficient, a training method that encourages LLMs to activate fewer neurons through structured sparsity. Its hardware-aware kernel reduces LLaMA2-7B inference latency by 25% at 50% sparsity.

  6. 2025

    Google faculty award

In July 2025, she becomes an inaugural recipient of Google's Machine Learning and Systems Junior Faculty Award with CMU colleague Akshitha Sriraman.

  7. 2025

    Efficient LLM reasoning

She coauthors Act Only When It Pays in 2025, which introduces GRESO, a pre-rollout filter that skips uninformative prompts for large language model reasoning.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Carnegie Mellon

As of October 2026, she is an assistant professor in Carnegie Mellon's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a visiting research scientist at Meta's FAIR.
